I think the most common dose of Folic Acid

is 1 mg every day but some people use much more. Also some people use

Leucovorin either instead of Folic Acid or in addition to it. It does

essentially the same thing as Folic Acid but may be more effective in stopping

side effects. I think Leucovorin is usually taken only once a week, possibly

the day after the Methotrexate but I don’t know much about it. God

bless.

Hair loss/thinning ... help

Hello All

I was diagnosed w/ RA about 5 years ago. I'm currently taking MTX,

folic acid and Remicade. I'm doing really well after moving from

Enbrel to Remicade a year ago.

Anyway, I've noticed that my hair is thinning dramatically in the past

few months. I've always had very thick hair so this isn't really

noticable to anyone but me at this point but I'm concerned.

I'm prescribed 20mg of MTX which I take in two 10mg doses weekly. It

doesn't bother me at all, never has, but obviously it's taking a toll

on my hair. I'm taking 1 mg folic acid daily. I've just cut the MTX

back to 15 mg.

Is there anything else I can do? What's the normal dose of folic acid?

Can it be increased?

Thanks very much

charlotte

MTX seems folic acid from the body as well as other nutients that bind to folic acid to keep hair strong in the follicle on the scalp. I have thick hair on the back but the top is baby fine and falls out alot. You have to take a super duper multi with Iron, Folic Acid, Biotin, Panothelinic acid, a super multi complex B as well as E, A, C, D Calcium etc. I recommend taking a super Skin Hair Nails Supplement a few times daily and Multi Complex Generic from Target or Spectravite chewable from CVS Brands. I dont wash it every day. I hardly brush to style it. Its very fragile so let it dry naturally. Use a moisturing shampoo as well. Keep yourself hydrated too. Another secret is to buy a satin pillow case. It tends to keep hair protected. You can go into www.google.com and type in MTX and hair loss. That should bring up loads of helpful info. Hugs, Deborah

I take Leucovorin (folinic acid) with my MTX. My rheumatologist has

me take 10mg at the same time I take my MTX (15mg). He said that

most rheumys have you take it the next day, but he doesn't notice any

difference and taking it at the same time makes it easier to remember.

I'm not sure what the difference between leucovorin (folinic acid)

and plain old folic acid, but as Harold says it seems to be more

effective against MTX's side effects.

For me, I don't have any side effects from the MTX, but I've never

tried taking the MTX with out the leucovorin either.

You might ask your doctor about it on your next visit.
