thing is i'm supposed to take four pills in the a.m. and four in the

p.m. so that wouldn't work for me . . . . . plus the fact that i take

all eight on saturday and still am somewhat queasy after dinner on

sunday evenings (although interestingly, not after lunch).

Dear Bonnie- No doctor has ever told me to take a BID dose the same day. I am on my 20th RD since being prescribed and on MTX off and on since 1995. I split 3 one night and take 3 the next. How you take your pills as long as you take them is your business. You know your body. The doctor doesnt understand what it means to feel your symptoms. Let him take an AM /PM or all at once dose and then let him tell you again. What I am saying is, taking your meds is important surely but so is listening to your body and coexisting with the disease, not getting wiped out with two or three days gone. I have had doctors tell me to take it all at once, take it am/pm, take it at night, or split it up over the next few days. Whatever WORKS for you, is what 90% of Rheumatologists said. If you realize after much deep medical research what MTX is and what it does, you would understand that it is a very very powerful medication that has very debilitating side effects. It is CHEMOTHERAPY after all. It is a fascinating drug. It targets abnormal cells, (RA white blood cells or cancer cells all look the same MTX. I promise you. It stops the bad cells from dividing to slow down their rapid multiplication. This means everywhere in your body. Blood, tissue, bone marrow , brain, organs right up to your hair follicles. MTX leeches the folic acid out of your body so taking it as a supplement works!!! It also dehydrates you because it begins working in the intestine like Remicade does. If you take a shot instead, there may be less side effects. It starts working the minute it hits your stomach thats why you get nausea. I know what you are going through and anything you can do to make it easier on yourself when you take it is so important. Doctors and patients pass MTX off as not a big deal but it is, especially someone who has symptoms. Know your body and treat yourself accordingly. Having it work while I am sleeping is also a good thing because the body heals itself then so the mtx has a chance to work even more effectively when my body is in a state of unconciousness. It doesnt have to chase the RA cells in blood because my blood and pulse are slow while sleeping so the hyperactive RA cells are slower and more easily targeted. Yes, I know I might be crazy, but crazy like a fox. Hugs, Deborah

sorry but what is BID and RD ? ? ? ? if i take all the pills saturday

a.m., i'll be nauseous on saturday night and if i take all eight

pills saturday night, i'm still going to be nauseous on sunday so

that really doesn't seem to be an answer . . . . . . i know it's

chemo and i know there are going to be side effects and i'm just

trying to find a way to listen to my doctor's advice and the

pharmacist's advice and all your advice and compromise somewhere

along the way . . . . . .

dare i say it - i'm terrified of needles and the longer i can put off

an injectible anything, the happier i'll be not to mention the issue

of being able to take time off work every week to get the shots.

I am not on MTX, so this idea may not help those of you who are, but It wouldn't hurt to check with your Dr and see if he has any objection to your taking a bit of ground Ginger root (ginger like you use to season apples.) If he has no objection, try a bit every day. It is an anti-inflammatory and great for digestion, and indigestion <G> I've found it the best thing I've ever used for carsickness (motion sickness) and even great to use with rubbing alcohol as an external application to ease pain in joints. It has a bit of heat that is good for the joints and a tiny bit of cayenne can be added for a bit more warmth, but go easy until you find your level of heat.

Just a thought.....may not cure RA, but helps me to live with it. I also take DGL to keep my stomach from being eaten up by NSAIDS.

Just an idea....hope this helps.

best, Lee

BID means to SPLIT THE DOSE UP. Take four pills one night and four the next night. I took my 3 pills last night and tonight before I go to bed. RD is short for rheumatologist. If I took 6 pills I would be sick. It just eats a hole in my stomach. My body likes the smaller dose over two days much better. I know its confusing. Just listen to your body. I tend to drink alot when on MTX to rehydrate myself. It does help. Hugs, Deborah

Hi,

I have been on pred for eons. Nausea is not a usual side effect of prednisone.

However, prednisone does cause gastric distress and, in some, can lead to

serious GI problems (peptic ulcer, pancreatitis etc...) that do have nausea as a

side effect. You should get a thorough GI work-up. There are many effective

anti-nausea drugs out there. I have never heard of nausea as a side effect of

xolair. There is no mechanism whereby xolair could cause it through its

pharmacological actions.

ps Doug it's 2003 not 1993!! Lol!

Thanks for posting :)

I have been on Xolair since it was first approved in 1993 and have had

no problems with nausea. This is the first time I have heard this

symptom brought up on this board. I hope others respond to your

question too. I would like to learn more too :)

I was on prednisone for seven and a half years. EVERY day! The last three

years of that, my daily maintenance dose was 60 mg per day.

I never had a problem with nausea on prednisone, but I do remember feeling

horrible stomach pains. I too, tried to eat to make the pain go away, but

quickly learned that it just wouldn't work for me.

I've never had nausea as a side effect of my Xolair use.

I do however, suffer tremendously from nausea when I get my migraine

headaches. It's just horrible. I take a prescription medication (Phenergan

or promethazine) for it as soon as possible, but I can't always get to it

in time. I also tend to get nausea in the morning if I try to eat too early

I've never been able to eat much before 10:00am or I get queasy as can be!

One thing that I have learned works WONDERS for nausea... better than all

the saltines and chicken broth in the world... is peppermint tea. I don't

know why it works, but I swear by it. I've taught this trick time and time

again to my friends that suffer from migraine nausea, morning sickness

during pregnancy, etc, and everyone agrees that it is a lifesaver! No milk,

a hint of sugar if you feel you need it, but it works just great! I keep a

box of it in the house at ALL times, it's as important for me to have on

hand as my Benadryl is! It works THAT well! I even brew extra during the

summer to keep in the refrigerator because it is EXCELLENT iced, and helps

so much when I'm having a bad string of migraines!

For you women out there... I have no idea why, but it also works miracles on

cramps during your monthly cycles. Again, I don't know WHY, but I just know

it WORKS!

Hope this helps, and I hope you figure out what's triggering your nausea!

Anyone who has taken prednisone knows that awful nausea side effect

where you think if you eat the feeling will go away but doesn't...

having been on evil candy for thirty years I am accustomed to that.

I've had two Xolair injections and am noticing an increased nausea the

past two months and it's been really bad since the last injection - I

am aware of it most of the time. Nothing I drink or eat (yogurt,

bread) seems to make a difference. I'm already on Nexium twice a day

but I don't notice reflux, just this sicky feeling in my stomach. It's

kind of like when I was taking Slow FE Iron supplement (I've been

doing Feosol the past year and have not had that horrible sick to my

stomach until this summer).

Is this a Xolair coincidence of something else or do others have this

symptom from Xolair?

When I was pregnant, I used accupress band on my wrists. They work wonder for

me. You can find them next to the nausea meds in Walmart, Kmart, etc. This may

help you until you further evaulated by your doctor

thanks everyone for your input - obviously the nausea

is coincidental with my starting Xolair. I am amazed

at the postings that only one person said they had

that severe hunger and there were few experiences with

nausea from prednisone. People I know on steroids all

complain about that and being ravenous.

Today I drank a half bottle of flat ginger ale (I

don't do diet soda). I'm a little better today but

I've started eating crackers again, which I used to

consume pretty regularly and just got away from it.

Yea, I probably do need a GI work up... I'm just

putting off all procedures until the Xolair kicks in -

I'm really concerned about having any anesthetic right

now, I got rushed to the ER a week ago with huge

swollen ankles - they thought I was in congestive

heart failure but the tests said no, for the first

time in my 30 years of being on prednisone I'm

retaining fluid so this past week they have me on a

diuretic.

Peppermint tea is a nice suggestion but I'm allergic

to mint and also don't do chamomile. I do have one of

those ice tea makers - love it! - and my home brew is

all decaf 1 bag green tea, 1 bag white tea, and 2 bags

of celestial seasons coconut chai. About ten days ago

I have recently stopped using artificial sweetner and

am using washed raw cane sugar (but I've been nauseous

the past couple of months before this change in what

I'm sweetning tea with).

thanks for sharing your experiences on this!
