Savant syndrome is a separate condition. It does usually occur with

autism, but not always. High functioning autistics have normal to

above normal IQs and are able to function in the world much easier

than those who are low functioning. Low functioning usually have

lower than normal IQs, but since testing these individuals is so

Obviously the character in Rain Man was unable to function in the

world, so I can't imagine why they'd call him high functioning. His

autism symptoms were severe.

I would agree that high functioning autism enables the individual to

persevere in a subject so that they are certainly expert in that

subject. I have heard that it is believed by some that Einstein was

HFA, I've never heard savant with it. There are quite a few " genius "

who are attributed with HFA including Mozart, Beethoven, H G Wells.
