Guest guest
Get this...while shopping at Sam's Club this afternoon I came across a set of mixing bowls made in China. The label in big bold letters the box reads, Melamine Mixing Bowls. It feels like we are living in the twilight zone! We got a pic of it on the camera phone if anyone is interested in seeing this for themselves. Keep an eye out for that irradiated symbol and #3, 6 and 7 plastics. They say that # 1's 2, 4, and 5's are not so bad. the Number 5 is suposed to be the safest. Just found out also that Saran wrap and Zip lock brands are BPA free, but who knows what else lurks in them. Regards, Adrienne The FDA should be disbanded. Guest guest
That's funny, we just found CHILDREN'S and BABY'S PLATES AND BOWLS that said on the back made in china and were 100% MELAMINE!I was like wtf......?! Even asked one of the clerks about it and she's like no everything that has that toxic stuff was removed from shelves... I'm like you're thinking BPA... this is melamine... so sad how so few people know the truth.... Guest guest
A few ideas: Melamine dishware has been around as long as I can remember. At least since the early 70's. There's a certain quality (obviously plastic type stuff, somewhat dull in sound when you tap it, definitely denser than plain plastic plates, somewhat chalky in luster - - - ) to it that makes it immediately recognizable. I don't know how toxic it is when it is inert - like in a plate or bowl - doesn't matter, in a way, because my folks always used glass or pottery to eat off of, and I've done the same all my adult life; we've always avoided plastics of any kind. The point I'm trying to make is that I've seen melamine plates, bowls, cups and saucers for decades. I have always figured it to be as toxic as all plastic products (which I've always avoided), but that what has gotten into food products has been melamine that leached from the MANUFACTURING of dishware into food. Perhaps I'm not quite up to date on the manner in which the melamine was leaked into food products. Regardless, I think all plastic is toxic, but my other point is that melamine has been on shelves and in homes for decades, and I don't think that because of it having been found in food, it is likely to be pulled from everywhere. People just don't seem to be aware of the fact that it is already out there in great quantity. I'd love to see all plastic phased out and people everywhere using glass, crockery and stainless, which are all safer and which, when disposed of, go back into the environment so much more cleanly. Guest guest
I just realized that the dishes I've been using the last few years are Vanda, also melamine, made in SE Asia (not China, but close).
