Guest guest
Hi Everyone. I posted a few weeks ago about some recurring illness I've been suffering for the past several months. My dr. had suspected the culprit with my Humira and the fact that I went back to work in an elementary school in September after being a stay at home mom for several years. Since November I've been sick more days than not. As soon as I get better, it just starts to come back. I've now been off my Humira since Dec 12. My story only gets worse and I'm looking for some encouragment. 12 days ago I became suddenly ill again. It had been about two weeks since the last " sinus infection " and suddenly I was struck with a bad fever, chills and body aches. At first I thought it was a flair coming since I've been off my meds but soon enough I knew it wasnt. I went into the dr. and they gave me new antibiotics and drew blood. I was called back in two days later and was told that my blood counts were very low (white count & platette)they drew them again and basically nothing changed in the two days between. Oh, I also developed a fine rash during this time that lasted about 3/4days. I was sent home and my dr was going to consult with hemotology and oncology. He called me at home and said he was given some reassurance that it didnt look like a lymphoma or lukemia since my red count was still good. They then did a ct scan of my abdomen yesterday. I guess my liver levels were high and he felt my spleen was enlarged (though I dont know why). Had the scan, it only showed gall stones which they think is unrelated. I now have an apt with the hemotologist/oncologist on Thursday. Scared to death. In the meantime I feel I've " recovered " from that illness and am already onto a new " cold " and feel on the upswing from that one too. I also found out that there have been a few kids in my first grade class and several in my hallway that have had fifth disease, and I'm just wondering if I could have gotten something as simple as that but it affected me way worse than normal. I tink we're all just hoping that the Humira had really socked my system and I'm just going to need alot of time for it to recover fully. Any info? Guest guest
I’m sorry that things have been going so poorly for you. The combination of a biologic and working with young children can cause lots of problems because children are natural germ magnets. You might read up on antibiotic therapy using tetracycline derivatives such as Minocycline. They are recognized by the American College of Rheumatology as DMARDs and clinical studies show them to be similar in effectiveness to the biologics. If you take those either instead of or in addition to the biologics it should reduce the random infections you are getting. The antibiotics not only kill the bad bugs but they also kill the good ones in the digestive tract that help to metabolize your food. Along with antibiotics it is important to also take probiotics. I don’t take antibiotic therapy but I do eat yogurt daily to get acidopholus probiotics. I hope you get things under control. God bless. Guest guest
Gall Stones not related??? If you have stones then you can have a blockage. If your filtering organs are enlarged (spllen) liver- etc then gall stones should be considered. Stay away from children. That is not the job for you to be in. Thats just asking for more trouble. The more infections you have the worse your RA will become. A biologic and your good health (infection free) is more important than working at the moment. Your wellness comes first and always should. My RA was triggered because I was a nanny at the time with two very sick all the time children. I was sick all the time and thats how it all started. See if they can actually prove your stones arent the issue. See the blood specialist and go from there. Let us all know. Guest guest
Hi, I had similar experience with enbrel. I was in & out of Hosp ever other week hooked up on IV antibotics (for 6 months). finally stopped the enbrel (it was just part of the issue) and had to give up the volunteer work at my daughters elementary school, limited my indoor social contact during flu season, get a flu & & pnuemonia shot and if I start to get a cold or something I stop my meds for a couple of days (not to long) to get over it. If I keep taking them when I am coming down with something I end in hospt with pnuemonia and I now take antibotics everyother day. With the expection of some surgeries , I have been "health" and not in hosptial stay for a couple of years now. Talk to your Dr about an antibotic maintenance plan during the flu/cold season. Guest guest
Get your Gall bladder checked out. I had to have my gall bladder removed 2 yrs ago as a result of my meds.Deborah Bargad <dbargad@...> wrote: Gall Stones not related??? If you have stones then you can have a blockage. Guest guest
I Deborah, I think they're saying the gallstones aren't the main issue because until last week my illnesses have all been recurring sinus infections. Like my body just can't fully get rid of the bacteria. Once I go off the meds, it just comes back. Last week was the first time I had a different situation. Mainly a fever, chills, aches and a rash for a few days, then all that subsided into just another cold which I am still fighting. What prompted all the worrying is my blood tests came back extremely low in my white & platette count. My dr. basically doesn't know if something more serious is going on with me or if my body is just really socked from being on humira and has been fighting infection after infection and just hasnt recovered yet. That is best case scenario really. Will keep everyone posted and thanks for your response > > > Hi Everyone. Guest guest
Hi Harold, I'm going to ask about that. At this point I've been told my days on Humira are over and honestly right now Im so scared i've caused more damage to my body possibly being on it that I dont feel like taking anything but tylenol ever again. I definetely dont want on any of these exotic RA meds. > > I'm sorry that things have been going so poorly for you. Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for your story. I'm really hoping that something similar is what's going on with me. That my system just got too worn down and now it's picking up everything little bug, and I just can't quite get back to normal. Thanks > Hi Everyone.
