Guest guest
Hello. Only your doctor can tell you why she did not prescribe anything to slow or stop the progression of RA. There are medications for this and they are called DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) and it is most common for one or more of them to be prescribed when RA is even suspected. Please call the rheumatologist’s office and ask whether you should be on one. If possible take a friend with you to your doctor’s appointments to help you remember what was said. Also make notes either during the appointment or as soon as it is over. It’s hard to remember everything that happens at an appointment so do what you can to remember more of it. Is it possible that the rheumatologist discussed DMARDs and also mentioned the possible side effects? Some people seem to be more afraid of the possible side effects than they are of the likely permanent joint damage so they refuse to take a DMARD. If your rheumatologist does not either prescribe a DMARD or give a good reason for not doing so I think you should see another rheumatologist. There is a process for a rheumatologist to be certified by a special board as being qualified to practice but some call themselves rheumatologist without being board certified. If possible you should be seeing a board-certified rheumatologist. If you don’t get satisfaction from your current rheumatologist, please seek a second opinion. God bless.
