Guest guest
good morning all: I want to know about your experiences with neck pain and neck surgery. When is neck pain bad enough to risk surgery (fusion)? I have had RA for 22 years and it has effected my neck now and I have pretty good pain, specially on my left side, C-1-2 they say are unstable, but not enough to be dangerous. 4-5-6- are also unstable. My question, have any of you had neck surgery and if so what kind and what was your experience with it? Thanks for your replys. Guest guest
Hi Sherry, I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I to have a great amount of neck pain. My rumy sent me to a neck specalist. He said that I have a lot of unstability but that in his opinion I should wait as long as possible before I think about surgery. Just make sure you get a second opinion and maybe a third. If you can afford it. Hope you are painless soon. Guest guest
Dear Sherry- I would think about trying a glucosamine chondritin compound with hyluran. It might ease the pain, lubricate the neck joints and keep you from surgery a bit longer. Remember to build up your pillow so that your neck and spine are straight. I find a heating pad and massage help alot. This supplement is contra indicated in RA but does work joint deterioration for OA. Guest guest
Gee , I wish I had read ahead to your post before responding to Donna. On one hand it is good to talk to someone who has had this problem happen to them, but on the other I am saddened to believe that there really could be some damage and I might have to deal with this now. I just can't believe this is happening.I know some might wonder, " Why is she getting all upset about this? " and my response is that it took me 5 years to make the decision to go ahead with revision. Five long, hard years. And then I had to consider the cervical first. OK, done. Then Ihave this problem with my knees and the surgeon doesn't want to go ahead with revision without my getting them checked out first. My local doc refuses to MRI them, so now my surgeon has me seeking a 2nd opinion. So now there is the question hanging over my head as to whether I am going to need knee surgery. And - you guessed it - the surgeon insists that I do that before revision. So revision gets pushed further away again. Now, my voice problem - he tells me yesterday that I can't go ahead with any knee surgery before I " fix " the voice problem. And on top of this, I was just given a promotion in my relitively new job that requires a lot of talking and driving. I know I sound like a big complaining baby - Io think I just need a good cry. I'm just overwhelmed. I know it is not a huge deal. I DO know that. I'm just upset that I am encounetering these obstacles and I have barely forged ahead yet. D. Guest guest
Well, it doesn't make me feel better necessarily as I hate having to hear other peoples angst and pain as well. We really are all in this together and thank God for that! I am going back to work today (attempting anyway!) so here goes......... Guest guest
Dear , My goodness, how it appears to be one step forward and two steps back with your road to a better quality of life. I know how hard it is to look at the bright side but let me take a stab at it for you. As you know, revision is very tough on the back but it is much more tougher on the knees. For the first time in years your knees will probably be doing their job. I had no problems with my knees prior to surgery but after a while when I started to walk and work out, I actually thought I was going to need knee surgery. The pain in my knees lasted almost a year. So, if you have problems going in, it would be twice as hard, if not more, after, on your knees. If they are not functioning or they hurt to much, your not going to move, walk or do any exercise as deemed by Glazer necessary so they need to be operational before. As for your voice box well, it speaks for itself. ha, ha...get it. I am a wise guy. I can see they are stumbling blocks but maybe an outlook of they are preparation requirements might be helpful. I am often glad for people, that these things crop up before surgery rather then after when it can be so much more devastating. Want to shoot me yet?? Try to keep your head up , we are all on your side and are rooting for you.
