Guest guest
Hi Kim, If you can apply for social security disablity, do so right away and I understand it really helps if you hire one of those legal agencies that specializes in getting people approved. I don't know anything about disablility through an employer but here in Utah we have a Disability Law Center that helps people. Call 211 and see if there is anything like that in your area. I am on SS disability and was approved first time, tho it took 9 months. But I understand that not everyone is as lucky as I was in getting approved. Good luck to you. Guest guest
Shirley - what was the basis of your disability claim? HCV? Or was it other issues? What is the extent of your disability? I know many people are able to live active lives with HCV and during treatment so I'm wondering how you were able to be approved so quickly. Long term disability through your employer is usually an employee-paid option. At my last job, I paid for it and it would have entitled me to 2/3 of my salary tax-free for as long as I was disabled. Here in NY, the state disability pays you for 26 weeks at a max of $170 per week. Guest guest
Hi! I just registered for the Hep-C support group last Friday and got your email in my box today. Not sure exactly how this works yet, but I do know about SSD and private disability insurance as well. I was not, unfortunately, one of those who could work thru the treatment and go on living their lives when I took it about 20 years ago. I'm starting the Interferon/Ribavirin next Sunday again, which is why I signed up on this website. Anyway, regarding SSD, it took me five years to get approved; this was in CA and even though I was unable to work, I didn't meet the exact medical criteria. That's why it took so long - the judge could see how sick I looked so he finally took into consideration my whole physical condition and approved it. I started the legal process without an attorney, and ended up hiring one about half way through the process. If you go to www.ssa.gov, there will be step-by-step instructions to get you started. I hope this helps you. Guest guest
Hi, Kim - I think I just sent you a note thru someone else's email; I'm new to the group and don't know what I'm doing yet but when I read your note I had to get back to you again. I, too, have had Hep C for 30 years and went thru interferon back in 1981; I'll be taking the interferon/ribavirin starting next Sunday and am NOT looking forward to it because I was flat on my back for six months last time. I went thru the disability maze for five years back in 1998 before getting approved because, I believe, I didn't give up. It's my understanding that you get rejected a couple of times (as I did) but you gotta keep appealing. I didn't give up because I had been a legal secretary for many years so the process didn't overwhelm or frustrate me. I don't know if I could have gone thru all the bureaucratic b.s. otherwise. If you want to contact me, please do - I'll be happy to help if I can. Take care, --val-- Kim Hinken <niteflyer1960@...> wrote: Hello Everyone, I need some advice. My disability coverage is through my employer and they have not been very eager to assist me. If anyone else has gone through the disability benefits maze I would appreciate any advice you can give. My life has been turned completely upside down because of my virus. I've had it for 30 yrs but recently began to be very symptomatic and unable to do my job.Any words of wisdom? Take care, Kim --------------------------------- goes everywhere you do. Get it on your phone.

Guest guest
Hi- Staying at home and not having enough credits doesnt mean you cant get the medical benefits that medicare and medicaid have to offer. If you have a spouse and can or are under his insurance than that is a good option. If you are two credits shy shouldnt eliminate you from getting some benefits depending on your family situation. If you can work from home somehow at something you feel wouldnt be too taxing on your health, and get those credits then do try. Good Luck. How long did you wait from being diagnosed before seeking disability? It has been 5 years for me. Unfortunetly for me, I think I would have a harder time qualifying because I am actually just short the required amount of credits to qualify for benefits based on my work history. I'm 34 and have been a stay at home mom for about 10 yrs now. I kinda feel stuck because now theres no way I feel I could go back to work full time...i have tried a few part time jobs over the years and just see it not realistic to think I could suddenly work full time now. So what happens for a person like me, I paid in..some...but now can't even work to get the 2 additional credits I need. Can I still qualify? I kinda feel that because I chose to be a stay at home mom, and came down with ra during that time that i've screwed my chances of ever qualifying for disability when I know Im going to need them at some point.
