Guest guest
Hi June, and welcome to the board. Don’t be shy about posting because that’s how we learn about RA, both by posting and by reading the posts of others. I didn’t get RA till I was 74 and that was 6 years ago. At the time I was diagnosed I was in the hospital with pneumonia and had no previous symptoms of RA. I was bedridden and couldn’t even get up to use the bathroom, even with help. For RA I was started with 40 mg Prednisone and the standard dose of Arava. After a few months without much help and not being able to reduce Prednisone much the doctor added Methotrexate and I took myself off Arava (likely a mistake). After a few more months without much more luck we added Remicade at 3 mg/kg and began adjusting both the time between infusions and the dose till we got to 6 mg/kg every 6 weeks. Then I was finally able to get completely off Prednisone. It’s been about five years since I took Prednisone regularly but I still keep some around for a short jolt when I feel the need. It’s usually several months between jolts of Prednisone. We also have been reducing Methotrexate and also reducing the amount of Remicade and increasing the time between infusions. Now I am on 3 mg/kg and 8 weeks between infusions. For me I have no trouble with the Remicade and it has allowed me to lead a fairly normal life for my age. Remicade does affect everyone differently so it might not do the same for you, but I do recommend trying it for a few months to see if it helps. Unfortunately we have to try it for a while to see what it does for us. I hope you get your RA under better control. God bless.
