Guest guest
Hi Ken: AIT may be very helpful for this, someday, we may try it again. We did it when the boys were very young, didn't see much. Magnesium is also helpful for this, both of the boys have sensitive hearing. Happy Holidays Tina
Guest guest
Thanks Tina, I feel like we are on a roller coaster right now with this increased sensitivity and irritability but when I stand back and also get input from the therapists, it seems he is doing better and on the right path. That's why I feel we need to stick this one out. Yesterday he and we survived 7 hours of Disneyland so I guess we can handle it. Ken

Guest guest
Gretchen, Yes I have had this since getting implants, you should go to a very good ENT...... When I had implants in I had to go to the doctor for ear cleaning. Then after removed I did this again, went to the doctor for ear cleaning. Ear Wax built up in front of the ear drum. I let them clean my ear wax out..... Came home and read this site where it says NOT to do this.... I let them get me again, hopefully it didn't damage my eardrum, as this site said it could if not done properly. Guest guest
Gretcen, Don't you get tired of hearing about fungal issues? . . . I have had an ongoing problem with one ear for years and years . .. At one time, I lost all the hearing in that ear . . . fortunately some of it returned. I've found that, the closer I follow an antifungal program, the better my ear feels. . . .Eating raw, crushed garlic works really well. Guest guest
, I have tinnitus now--thanks for the articles. Mine started after my root canal therapy..immediately after. Even though I got rid of the root canals in the hopes that it would clear up both my knee pain (it did) and the ringing in the ears, it did not. So, I live with it. It's annoying. Guest guest
Hi Geri- I wear hearing aids now. I've had them for a year. What a world of difference they make too. My hearing wasn't great growing up but I still did good. I am 55 now. My older sister who always had perfect hearing started wearing aids too a few yrs ago. She is also CMT free. And yes, they are costly and for what ever reasons most insurance companies don't cover them. Barb
Guest guest
I wear Beltone hearing aids with dual microphones and I paid the same amount I would have paid else where. I choose Beltone because it is so close to where I live and I like the people working there very much. I can pop in anytime for help. Guest guest
Geri: I have been wearing digital aids for 8 years and I think they are great! Hearing aids are not something to make a fashion statement with. Get the biggest aids you can. Digital aids have two microphones -- one pointing forward and one pointing backward. Through the wonders of signal processing (Here thank the space program for without it hearing aids, gas permeable contact lenses, and plastic eye glass lenses wouldn't exist) the signals are mixed in a remarkable simulation of real hearing. The larger the aid, the greater distance between the two microphones giving better data to the mixer. Another benefit of larger aids is the batteries are larger and they last longer. Last month I went to behind-the-ear models because I couldn't change batteries in my old full ear models. My fingers just don't have the dexterity they once had. I dropped batteries and more seriously dropped the aids themselves. I just couldn't handle the smooth, round contours anymore. Behind the ear aids are larger and have boxy edges to hold onto. Battery changes are easy and infrequent. They are so comfortable I have to make sure remember to take them off when I shower or exercise in my deep water aerobics class. Stay away from hearing aid chains -- Beltone and Miracle Aids. They try to sell you up to features you don't need. The costs at these stores are usually twice what you would pay from an audiologist affiliated with a ENT practice. I paid $3000 for my pair of aids. Just for fun I called Beltone and was quoted $7500. You need to have realistic expectations of what a hearing aid offers. They won't give you perfect hearing. They will give you better hearing. You may not know exactly what someone says behind you, but you will know that some behind you spoke. Hearing is the hidden disability. No one knows that you didn't hear something they said. All they know is you ignored them. On the other hand, hearing aids help you in crowded waiting rooms. You just turn them off and go on reading your book in blessed silence. --Larry
Guest guest
Thank you Larry, I knew the cost was high, I'll just have to go on say " What did-ya-say " and my family will have to be tolerant...LOL Geri
Guest guest
I've also had problems with my hearing in the past. Feels like there's water in my ear that won't pop. It comes and goes. I've been to hearing tests, ear nose and throat specialists, etc. Nobody can pin it down and give me an answer. I haven't experienced this for about 6 months now. I hate to blame everything on my CMT, but I think it has something to do with this one.
Guest guest
I have a very strong family history of hearing loss (early -- starting to be noticable in the 30s) that follows the same pattern of heredity as the CMT. (i.e. those most affected by CMT are the ones with hearing loss). Dizziness has also been a component with the same family members -- we've each been independantly diagnosed with Menieres disease, hmmmm. Guest guest
Very interesting, my hearing loss was also accomanied by dizziness, sometimes I have to hold onto something or sit down. The ear nose and throat specialist also thought I may have Menieres. I have not talked to my family too much about it. MaybeI should? Guest guest
Hi Teri, I am glad and want to help you out with any issues you may have, I am 51 yrs old and I deal with all my issues to make life easier to live, as you know when we get older we have health and cancer issues to worry about and CMT progressing on stronger, it's like a no win situation but we are trying our best. I was born with CMT and deafness or I may have got it after birth, I am the baby of my family of 4 sisters and they don't have CMT or hearing loss. With nerve deafness, as you know inside our ears use muscles and nerves to make our hearing work. I am sorry you have lost some hearing at childhood, I use my eyes as hearing (lip reading) while growing up. it is hard to predict if hearing loss is from CMT but CMT effects people in different ways. Guest guest
Hi I hope that I can help from my experience with my daughter. My daughter from a very young age really battled with fluid behind the eardrum also caused from allergic rhinitis from allergies. She did have quite a few earinfections and by 8 months she had tubes fitted. Her nose still ran but her ears were no longer full of fluid. By 18 months these tubes had fallen out. She no longer battled with ear infections but still had fluid behind the eardrum. I think that you only get an ear infection if that fluid gets infected with bacteria which it can do when it is just sitting there for a long period of time. It can also get really thick and then it is called glue ear as the fluid is really hard to move. My daughter had many readings done with a tympanometer. A typmpanogram is the graph generated by the tympanometer. As far as I know this is not a hearing test as such but it rather is used to test the condition of the middle ear and how well the eardrum and conducting bones move by creating variations in ear pressure in the ear canal. Your son would " fail " this test as the fluid behind the eardrum is not allowing the correct amount of movement in the middle ear. With my daughter they said that they could not conduct a hearing test until all the fluid was cleared away so they could get a correct reading. When children have fluid behind their eardrums they can't hear as well as they should. Kind of like you lightly putting your fingers in your ears. You can hear but not as well as you should. It depends on your ENT but he should use some medications to help the ear ger rid of the fluid like cortizones. If these don't work then tubes are usually suggested. We had to have a second pair of tubes fetted when our daughter was 20 months as we were battling to clear her ears so we could do the 3 hour sedated ABR hearing test. In the end she could hear perfectly and I was glad that I did the sedated test as then I knew if were also battling with a hearing loss as well as apraxia. I am not saying that you should have a sedated hearing test it was just that we couldn't get a proper reading ie she kept failing the OAE hearing test because of the fluid and the tubes. My daughter still watches lips when people are talking I don't know if it's a habit or she is just trying to figure out how to move her mouth. Hope that helps Nikki
