Guest guest
I too have also had this problem, and the on ly way I can cope with it is to use a high factor sun mousse during the summer (every single day) I always apply this when I have my morning shower and then I can forget about it for the rest of the day. Here in England we have such bad weather that for most of the time I can cope but you can bet that if I do not apply sun mousse then I will be outside, the sun will come out and hey presto, covered in rash, so I just do it every day in the summer. I have also found b y the way that since on MTX I have been very bothered with insect bites, they seem to like the taste of me too much, I was told by rheumy that this is common, so INSECT REPELLANT A MUST regards Lynda From: whisperingmoonwoman2001 <whisperingmoonwoman2001@...>Subject: MTX common side effectRheumatoid Arthritis Date: Wednesday, 17 June, 2009, 3:31 AM Been taken mtx for sometime now I thought I had everything covered as far as side effects, I was having hair loss but got over that by increasing the folic from 2 pills daily to 3 pills daily but now I got this other problem. I knew by being on this med it would cause me to sunburn more easily but in my case I very seldom burn so I thought I could sit out an enjoy the summer rays after a long cold cold Winter but I was sooooo wrong, I spent about an hr outside in the shade this past sunday enjoying a bbq, visiting an watching my grandson an great nephew play, well anyway I ended up getting this rash which I found out is a common side effect to the mtx. The phram told me instead of a sunburn I got rash an need to stay out of the sun, so that means I can't ride m ATV anymore, I can't work on some chairs I'm redoing, I can't play with my grandkids outside when they come to stay over nite. I'm stuck to being indoors unless it's cloudy out. There has to be something I can take to counter act these side effects, I don't want to have to use sunblock just to sit out for 15 to 20 mins in 75 degree temps or use when I got shopping which means walking around out in the sun. If there is nothing I can do to counter act the side effects I might as well board up my all the windows in my house to keep out the sunan buy a front door that doesn't have a window in it, whats a person to do? Guest guest
I have the same exact thing. If my arms are in the sun at all I will break out in a red bumby itchy rash. My arms usually stay that way all summer, it usually doesnt go away until december. Sunscreen doesnt help at all. If I use it the rash just seems to burn more or attract the sun even more. My doctor say to wear long sleeve...Ya right!! I was at the park a few weeks ago and noticed the top of my head got some sun and now I have some red itchy bumps up there. A coworker noticed that it was really read. So now I need to wear long sleeves and wear a hat. I might as well move to alaska now. If you find anything that helps please please please let me know. I use lots of aloe and moisturizer everyday and I do have some RX cortisone that helps the itching a bit when its really bad. Guest guest
Is it mainly on your arms or do you get the rash in other places? I dont seem to be bothered any more then anyone else with bugs though. Thank god! Guest guest
Here in North Dakota it can get pretty hot in the summer temps sometimes in the 100s, but I thought if the temps were in the mid 70s I should be ok but I was sooooo wrong. I thought about getting sun screen to try to see if that helps out with the rash problem if it doesn't I'm going to talk to the rheumy about finding something else to take for this RA something that is NOT going to cause when I go outside in the sun. --- In Rheumatoid Arthritis , KENNETH PARTON <lynda.parton@...> wrote: > > I too have also had this problem, and the on ly way I can cope with it is to use a high factor sun mousse during the summer (every single day) I always apply this when I have my morning shower and then I can forget about it for the rest of the day. Guest guest
I told my hubsand I might as well wear long sleeve shirts an get a wide rim hat to wear outside he said we go won't go there till we know for sure what the cause is. When I talked to the phram she said that the sunburn will be in form of a rash, I'm going great just what I don't need. Guest guest
I don’t have this problem but from other boards I have heard that not all long-sleeved shirts are equal for sun protection. I don’t know how to check or where to get effective protection but I think someone mentioned a dive shop. That might be reasonable because people who engage in water sports are likely to be in the sun and to wash off some of the sun block. I hope you find something that works for you. God bless. http://www.solartex.com/faq.html I found this link on Google but I know nothing about it or the products. Guest guest
Hi How much of the mtx are you all using? This is scaring me because I live in South Africa and I burn even in the shade. I only start using it this year and are on only 10 mg a week. Guest guest
I had a doctor who first thought it was the MTX causing my rash after sun exposure. I went off the MTX for about 3 weeks, but continued taking the Aleeve that I was using for pain. I still had the rash and we decided to try something different. Turned out that the rash was caused by the naproxen (aka Aleeve), and not the MTX. I also get the same type of rash from ibuprofen and most other pain meds so I am not taking any at this time.I don't mean to sound stupid but are you taking anything OTC for pain? Could that be causing the rash? Most people don't know that pain meds and sun exposure can and does cause a rash. But, I actually heard a commercial for Celebrex that mentioned that it can cause a rash, too. From: whisperingmoonwoman2001 <whisperingmoonwoman2001@...>Subject: MTX common side effectRheumatoid Arthritis Date: Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 9:31 PM Been taken mtx for sometime now I thought I had everything covered as far as side effects, I was having hair loss but got over that by increasing the folic from 2 pills daily to 3 pills daily but now I got this other problem. Guest guest
Here is my solution. I always wear a light cotton long sleeved shirt, open airy, something that will breathe. I wear a tank top with a light shirt over that. I also wear a light wide brim hat made of cotton. I dont like straw but thats a personal preference. I wear 3/4 cotton pants with sandals. Use SPF Ombrelle 70 block on your hands and tops of feet/body face. Wearing waterproof is uncomfortable for me but also a personal preference. Mtx can cause a rash without the sun, just a hot shower can do it. Also it stands to reason that RA is a kissing cousin to lupus and the skin can react simply because of that.
