I've been taking rather large doses of MTX for three years -- 50 mg/week by injection -- and I have not lost any hair. Guest guest
" Has this happened to anyone else - at any dose? " I have been experiencing hair loss lately too. I'm on 20 mg. a week of MTX. I talked to my rheumy about it and he wasn't very specific but he said it would stop. My hairdresser pointed out that at least new hair is still growing in, but it doesn't seem like it's coming in fast enough! I've been on the MTX since September of 2000 and the hair didn't seem to start falling out till about a month ago. I hope it's not my imagination, but I think the loss might be slowing a bit. That's important to prevent hair loss as well as to help with other side effects of MTX. Also, have you had your thyroid checked? Seems a lot of us with PA have a sluggish thyroid and that can lead to hair loss as well. Finally, I think there are just certain times of the year when we all lose more hair than normal (kinda like a dog shedding?) and the heat may have something to do with it. If none of those things are the reason, I'm afraid I don't really have any suggestions other than being extra gentle with it and maybe keeping it short. Good luck,
Guest guest
Amy in Oregon I have been on methotrexate for 2 years. Hair began falling out at 15 mg. That was 1 year ago. Am still on 15 mg but my hair is now getting thicker and in better condition. My beautician told me I lost about half my hair volume . Will be having my metho mg. raised in 3 weeks. Hopefully, I will not loose any more hair. Joanne from Ohio
Guest guest
Caroline, are you taking Arava with the MTX? I had extensive hair loss with Arava and had to quit it. Just wondered if you were doing a combo.
Guest guest
Hi Caroline- I had pretty bad hair loss and my Rheum gave me a pure form of folate to take every week (just once) in addition to my regular folic acid- its called Leuvocorin or something along these lines and it has made a huge difference. thank you! Guest guest
The mxt didn't make me lose hair, however, my recent gastric bypass has me going bald. :0( Anyway, at a group meeting, someone suggested Biotin as a supplement to combat hair loss. I have been taking it for only 2 weeks so far, so I haven't noticed if it has helped with my hair loss yet--BUT my psoriasis that is ever present on my ear and scalp is gone. Wow. That was nice. I can't swear by it after only 2 weeks, but it seems to have helped me a lot. It is just a vitamin supplement so I don't believe there is any danger (check with your doc-disclaimer- haha) Hope this helps someone. Peace, Tammie
Guest guest
Aloha! I'm new here but I just wanted to chime in after reading your comments. The reason why you've had success with skin clearing around the scalp and ear may be that it wasn't psoriasis affecting those areas. Not to suggest that you do not have psoriasis at all, but perhaps you have both psoriasis AND a mild case of seborrheic dermatitis or 'sebhorrhea' on the scalp and in the area around the ear as I do. Biotin has been found to help relieve symptoms of sebhorrhea but I'm not sure what the affects would be on psoriasis. Do you have psoriasis on other areas of your body and if so, is the Biotin clearing those areas as well? Mahalo! Moody
Guest guest
Hi All I am 54 and taking MTX for RA for a year and I seem to be losing hair. Help! What can I do to stop this and if I stop MTX and go onto Humira. will the hair grow back? Ken.
Guest guest
I think side effects are often reduced if you take Folic Acid along with Methotrexate. Also some side effects are reduced by taking Methotrexate by injection instead of orally. At the dose normally used for RA hair loss is much less pronounced than it is at the much higher doses used for chemotherapy. I’ve never been on Humira so I can’t comment on that. I haven’t been concerned about hair loss but I have heard that Biotin products are supposed to help hair loss. I’m not sure where to get them but I think a beauty salon might be a good place to start. God bless.
