Guest guest
Hi , We've used the K-mart/Wal-Mart velcro shoes---when Russ was a teenager, with growing feet, they were perfect but fell apart quickly because he gave them a workout and they were cheap. We also used the rubber laces and the corkscrew laces, when we couldn't find the velcro shoes. I bought those in Chernins when they were still in business. At 27, I can buy higher priced shoes because I know he won't be needing a new pair so soon. I bought Russ some Sketchers--slip ons--and he has worn those for about two years and they're still going strong. I bought some Rockport slip-ons earlier this fall when Famous Foot Wear was having a sale--very similar to his Sketchers--I thought it was time for some new ones. In fact, I buy all of 's shoes at Famous Footwear, styles he is able to wear and reasonably priced and not terribly likely to fall apart. He has several pairs of penny loafers for dress that look great and he likes--he's not like his Mom--I suffer for cute shoes and he won't be bothered if they pinch! Good luck--these things are important--look how many replies you've gotten to your post--we all have those problems as well as " deep thoughts " . Guest guest
The rubber band type laces are also in style...very easy to get on and off and there is no velcro to close. There are several brands that carry them... Guest guest
I haven't read all of the responses, so you probably have already gotten this recommendation - Sketchers - men's sizes, and they have a few styles that are like sports shoes that slip on. Famous Footwear has them. -------------- Original message -------------- From: beth Grzywa <grzywa@...> I know this is nowhere near as important as some of the other issues discussed. Guest guest
Sketchers are great and can be purchased at DSW.? I also buy Merrell mocasins from shoebuy.com.? The shoes themselves are roomy, slip on easily, have great support and wear like iron.? My son wears them during gym, too.? Shoebuy doesn't charge tax or shipping fees and if the shoes don't work out they'll send you a free return shipping tag.? Guest guest
My son is 18 and only wears velcro shoes. Wal-mart has a good variety - both black and white gym shoes that don't look to dorky, and are very reasonable.

Guest guest
I have got to put my two cents worth in. I received for my birthday today a pair of BEARPAW brand slippers that my orthotics fit into perfectly. They are available at Big 5 or online at http://www.bearpawshoes.com. I wear a size 8 shoes, but these slippers are a size 9 and they fit perfectly. They are fur-lined, with suade on the outside and a non-slip rubber bottom. They are the warmest footwear I have ever slid my feet into. Nina in Stockton
Guest guest
Lyn - I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and wear a child's size 11-12, depending on the shoe. Although I use a w/c now, I did walk (with crutches) for many years. My feet are what I call " puffy " - it's not so much that I have a high arch, it's just " fat " feet (especially on my instep) so sometimes (depending on the style) the shoes don't fit because of this. What size shoes do you wear? Are you not buying shoes " off the rack " because they don't fit, or is it because they hurt too much when you walk? Guest guest
Lynette - What size shoes do you wear? Honestly, I can't just buy anything I like (although finding something I like is a challenge in itself). I have bought several pairs from Zappos - they seem to have the best selection of small shoes and many have heels. For example, last fall I bought a pair of knee-high brown suede boots with a 2 1/2 " heel - they are stunning (I swear - I've wanted a pair of brown suede boots since I was in my early 20's and now that I've finally got them I WILL be buried in the darn things!!!). It's very hit or miss. About a month ago I found some really cute sandals at Gap Kids - they are champagne metallic and do have a heel strap and have a cork platform sole - they are also 2 1/2 " high. However, the strap over the toes was *really* tight so I had to take them and get them stretched. When I was walking, and needed some heels, I actually bought flats, took them to a shoemaker (sweet little Italian guy - boy do I wish *he* was still around!) and he would actually rebuild them for me and put heels on them! Because I had to buy shoes a size or two larger to accommodate my puffy feet, he actually built up the *inside* of the shoes so my foot wouldn't slide around. He charged me 70.00 a pair, but it was well worth it to me to actually have a couple of pairs of heels. Since you're paying to have shoes custom made, that might be an option for you (putting heels on flats) *if* you can get your custom shoemaker to do it for you. It's been 20 years, though, since I've had that done so my guess is it would be considerably more expensive now (but still cheaper than a pair completely custom made, perhaps - and they would certainly be more attractive). That is, if you *can* walk in heels. Tell me what size you wear, and I'll be on the lookout for you. I have a couple of other ideas, too - but need to know your size. Guest guest
Hi Sramser, I don't know about in the South, but here in PA, I can order the custom molded shoes through the podiatrist's office. Also, the one large pharmacy chain has custom shoe fitting/ordering department. If that's not the case there, maybe check with your family dr there for suggestions. Hope this helps and good luck to you. Marti > > This is my first time ever in a chat room so I hope I do this right. I > have had JRA all my life and now have to wear custom shoes. Guest guest
Hi there Oh don't worry, that's easily done , but easily fixed too. If you have have lost or erased message from your own email you can still find the post via groups. You should have a group box showing to the right of your address bar.. Click on that. Then you see the groups you belong to. Click on RA support and then scroll through or better still enter shoes to search and you will see recent posts. This is also very useful to look up topics in the past, from way back as a source of reference for a particular query. Hope this helps. I'm just learning too, and just discovering how clever and user friendly these shortcuts can be!! Good luck, Chris [ ] shoes Boy, I really am bad at this. Someone was nice enough to send me a messgae which I clicked on and then when I went back I lost the message from my screen. If I did something wrong, I apologize. Ignorance isn't supposed to be an excuse but that's all I have to offer. Hope you'll be patient with me as I enjoy reading this site and I think I am educatble and will get the hang of it. About the shoes: I should have been more specific. At this point in my life my quads are almost nonexistant and my biggest enemy is that I don't pick up my feet when I walk and I have falls. My husband says I could trip over paint, even one coat! Consequently I need all the help I can get and wearing anything other than leather soles is dangerous. I have tried the molded and special NB shoes but they only make me trip more. ___________________________________________________________ For Good. Guest guest
Best sandals i found are the Adidas ones that have the foam cushion..they can be purchased at Kohls for usually 30 bucks... as for shoes go..Merrells are really good, their made for hiking and outdoors, but they look like casual shoes and.most of them you can fit an insert in. They can be a bit pricey..over 100 bucks..but I have found a good pair of shoes is priceless! I also had a heel movement thing done...have you found that you get a lot of " shocker/nerve " pain? I have also seem to have lost alot of sensation on the bottom of my foot...my doc said its because the main nerve runs around the inside of the heel, and when he repositioned it, the nerve moved too...he said it can take up to 3 years for it to come back, or it might not at all... good luck! Guest guest
Matt, Having worn them all at one time, my experience is that New Balance are the best. I bought a pair of 927's but rarely wear them because I like the stability and motion control of the 856 model the best. Gretchen

What shoes do you where? I currently have a pair of New Balance 479 all Terrain shoes. I only have ever worn NB. I am currently looking at a different pair, 927's. They are a walking shoe and looks like they have greater support for my foot turning outward and inward (I can never remember the correct term). They look like they are more stable then the pair I have. Thanks
Guest guest
I currently wear their 622 shoes. I would say either the 927 or 622 would be better than the 479, which look pretty flexible. > > Hello all, I got a new pair of orthotics the other day and I am in the market for new shoes. Guest guest
Try the 993's from New Balance. I have worn them for a while. They work great with plastic afos and I have some that are channeled for metal afos too. Plus they are good looking shoes too.
