Guest guest
Liane, Do you wish to avoid discussion of controversial issues in general here, or you primarily worried about political controversy? One of the things I find strange about this list is that people post things they believe are important, but there is very little "give and take" on the ideas presented. (As a classroom teacher, my experience has been bringing up a controversial idea is one of the easiest ways to get people involved and interested.) Seems to be largely a small group of soapboxers. Correct me if I'm wrong! Athough I enjoy reading, writing, and hearing a variety of viewpoints on topics of personal interest, I find actually involving myself in the WORK of controversial issues to be draining (I can't seem to separate my ego) and I tend to avoid such situations. Right now I'm "playing" environmental activist and trying to save a line of 20 beautiful sycamore trees that are slated for execution by the highway department. (After 100 years of no problems, they have been deemed too close to the road because some idiot wasn't paying attention to his driving, and various other "misguided individuals" have sued the state for THEIR own negligent driving in other areas, and blamed their accidents/injuries on trees by the side of the road. They are in the highway right-of-way, have been for decades, but $$ is the bottom dollar and the real reason they are going.) I know many people want to see these trees saved, but it irritates me how 99% of us locals are literally driving by and doing nothing. Let's leave that for somebody else to deal with! I'm feeling a strong tendency toward that attitude myself! Janey
