Guest guest
I wonder if the crappy eating and overtraining go hand in hand for numerous reasons. One, the most obvious, would be that it would be easier to overtrain if your body isn't getting the right nutrients to help you recover. Another could be that people who overtrain do so because they aren't seeing the results they desire so they think more is better. To help make progress they probably take lots of meal replacement shakes and protein bars throughout the day which is crappy eating. I guess these two reasons could be interlinked as well. crayfishfeed <crayfishfeed@...> wrote: Thanks for the update. What I notice with people who switch over to eating healthy is there does seem to be a period of weight gain as if the body is trying to adjust to having proper nutrients, like it's hoarding them for a future time where the person will return to unhealthy food. I think the body gets the picture and then there is weight loss/gain (whatever is desired) and then people can make small changes and update their diet. I think cravings are an important clue, I'm not saying to what, just that they are an important clue. I knew this one heavy guy who made changes and it took almost a year to see changes and then he dropped some weight in a timely fashion. He was also over-training which is the commonest of mistakes in the gym and it seems crappy eating and overtraining go hand in hand which is ironic, don't you think. > > Well, I figured it's time for an update on my progress. Guest guest
I definitely think it's the " more is better " style of thinking that affects a lot of people and the " calorie in vs. calorie out " style of thinking which doesn't take into account how much it costs your body to deal with 300 calories of sugar cookies vs. 300 calories from fish, let's say, where the fish is actually nourishing your body. So they will go on the stairmaster until the little calorie ticker says 300 calories and think they're fine. I know b/c I used to do this a long time ago, lol. The worst part is I used to have so much muscle mass and definition, I got compliments on my body all the time. It's amazing how the body could put that muscle on while I was eating such crap. All that muscle ended up just disguising the real trouble I was in! I'm amazed when I think about it. > > > > Well, I figured it's time for an update on my progress. Guest guest
Alright,i have been trying like heck to follow the south beach program..Itried the atkins for a week and the bowels just weren't flowin properly, which is completely against my religion..so now the SB diet...Two years ago i find out I am Celiac,so I quit eating all the stuff necessary and have always been quite organic and avoided all the yuck foods for the most part..And now with and extra 10 pounds,I cannot fit into my clothes,so rather than buy all new duds..I am gonna lose this weight!HA!.So Atkins for a week, now I started the Sb for a week and was doing great( lost 7 pounds) and then Easter hit,So for that evening I left the plan and ate the wrong foods even for a Celiac and now since Monday, I am back on track and starving again..I wanted to attack the strawberries in the frig and eat a bowl of rice cereal so bad this morning. But,being the stick to it girl i am eating organic eggs with feta, tomatoes and spinach..AAAAAAHH!..So HELP..I walk and work out with weights, but am just so frustrated at this point I would love anothers opinion..Anyone for a challenge?Dee ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
If I had any pics, I swear I'd post them. I would use one as a little thumbnail pic for when I signed on here. I never took any pics around that time, it's like I was allergic to cameras or something. But sometimes I think it's for the better, I don't want to be one of those people who are hanging onto pictures of themselves from years ago, not accepting where they are at now which is what I would probably do! > > > > > > > > Crayfish, > > That's hot--got any pics? > > tb > > > > > > > > > > > > -- > *~ Siemens~* > > Mama to 3 wonderful blessings, Married to 1 wonderful man! > > No fear, only faith; no guilt, only grace; no pride, only praise; no claim, > only Christ > >
Guest guest
You sound very disciplined, so I think the weight will come off, know that. The reason why is b/c I swear the body knows when you are trying to lose the ten lbs that will make you so happy and it holds onto them and then when you are not trying so hard, it comes off. Sorry to get a little metaphysical but maybe it breaks down into not releasing cortisol from stressing out. When I lived in Spain I walked everywhere (like it would add up to two hours but throughout the day) and I got really, really skinny eating Mcs every day (this was before weston price) and when I came back I suggested to my clients to walk not once a day but go for multiple times throughout the day i.e. two fifteen minute walks. There was just something that made sense about it to me and lo and behold a book came out months later called The Spark that gave the physiology behind this very suggestion. Maybe that could help you. Also doing different cardio stuff along with the weights, like swimming one day, biking another, rebounding another being super careful not to over train. That helps a lot of people. > > Alright,i have been trying like heck to follow the south beach > program..Itried the atkins for a week and the bowels just weren't flowin properly, which is > completely against my religion..so now the SB diet...Two years ago i find out I > am Celiac,so I quit eating all the stuff necessary and have always been quite > organic and avoided all the yuck foods for the most part..And now with and > extra 10 pounds,I cannot fit into my clothes,so rather than buy all new duds..I > am gonna lose this weight!HA!.So Atkins for a week, now I started the Sb for a > week and was doing great( lost 7 pounds) and then Easter hit,So for that > evening I left the plan and ate the wrong foods even for a Celiac and now since > Monday, I am back on track and starving again..I wanted to attack the > strawberries in the frig and eat a bowl of rice cereal so bad this morning. But,being the > stick to it girl i am eating organic eggs with feta, tomatoes and > spinach..AAAAAAHH!..So HELP..I walk and work out with weights, but am just so frustrated at > this point I would love anothers opinion..Anyone for a challenge?Dee > > > > ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. > > >

The concept of balance is something I'm trying to attain in my own life (I've been underweight) along with eating a WAP diet for health. You might want to check out two excellent books: " The Body Myth " by Margo Maine and " Women Afraid to Eat " by Francie Berg.
Guest guest
Hi Kay, I am sure it's our eyes that causing balance problem, have you tried standing without holding on to something and close your eyes? you'll start to lean over and lose balance without knowing it. I get bad balance and fall while walking in dark room or outside even with eyes open. Guest guest
My impression is that my very poor balance is caused by the atrophy of muscles, especially in my feet. The muscles in my feet are just about gone, so I feel like I'm walking on bones, which don't provide a firm platform to stand on, so I'm easily thrown " off balance " . And having inadequate muscles in my ankles means I can easily turn my ankle and go down. AFOs help, but I still have to watch every step with great care. Of course with eyes closed, I have no visual clues to help me remain upright. Ruth

Guest guest
I think the two work together. Impaired feeling (including perception of position in space), muscle atrophy and the interplay between vision and balance all make us a bit unsteady. I have read a few sources that say impaired balance and hearing deficits can be part of CMT. My dad and both sisters have hearing loss. My sisters and I all have balance problems. Two of us were diagnosed with Meniere's disease before I was tested for CMT. My biggest problem is " stillness sickness " if you will. I keep moving after getting off boats, planes, etc. Weird. Guest guest
Yes, I have same problem. Hearing is excellent (sometimes too good!) When my husband goes to sleep before me and it is dark in the room, I get very shaky and balance is waaaay off. Also, when my son was younger I remember going on a merry go round in the mall, and when we got off, I was so nauseous and had to sit for an hour to regain balance. I can do rollercoasters, as long as they don't go round and round. I think feeling like you are still moving after getting off of planes and boats is fairly normal, that is why they call it " sea legs " I seem to have sea legs all the time! Guest guest
Hello, The first time I went on a cruise ship I had a hard time walking on shore. The sidewalks were moving up and down like waves. When I got home it took about a week to feel normal again. Sleeping on my water bed helped. Kay
Guest guest
Kay, I like that feeling though after getting off a boat. It almost makes you " find your feet " for balance. Dawn

Guest guest
Another cause for poor balance, especially among those who aren't young, is poor muscle tone. When muscles become weaker, we have more trouble keeping our balance. Strong muscles are more likely to do this without our making any conscious effort. Physical trainers often emphasize developing muscles specifically for balance. Guest guest
Ed in Kingston Tennessee, Sorry to hear about the job situation. Hope thing pick up soon. Meanwhile with all the time you have, you might want to meet with a physical therapist who may be able to provide you with some exercises to help with balance, coordination, etc. The ones I do in aquatics are a combination of hand/eye tracking with a foam float and martial arts hand/arm/body positioning, believe it or not! Guest guest
To Ed in TN. My balance was terrible and I was falling a lot until, on the advice of my Neurologist, I started to take Alpha Lipoic Acid capsules. I take 600 mg. a day. I feel this has definitely helped because I haven't fallen in the last three 6 years. I use a cane when I am out of the house - in the house I " wall surf " . I also use a rollerator when I go to malls etc (more stability than a cane). Check with your Dr. about the Alpha Lipoic Acid. Definitely works for me. Guest guest
Hi Ed, Pilates has helped me enormously with balance! The trick is to find a pilates trainer who is also a physicl therapist so they don't work you in the wrong way. Good luck Penny
