Trial shows promise for Hepatitis C treatment

By Liz Hobday

Updated March 15, 2011 10:22:00

A clinical trial of new Hepatitis C drugs in Melbourne has shown they could

potentially reduce treatment times, with fewer side effects than existing drugs.

The side effects of existing treatments are so severe few patients choose to

treat the disease.

The new drugs were trialed over a short period on more than 80 patients at six

hospitals, including the Alfred Hospital.

The hospital's director of gastroenterology, Stuart , says the results

are exciting, but it is early days yet.

" The potential of our trial is to show that we can inhibit Hep C substantially

to undetectable levels with a combination of oral agents that are well tolerated

and show a good safety profile without the need for interferon, " he said.
