Guest guest
Suzanne, I can only give you my OPINION on this issue. Dr. R has told me that narcotics are fine and are preferable to things like aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen. I tend to take nothing if I can live with the pain of a headache, etc. However, I believe that all of the recommendations from Dr. R concerning meds are just that recommendations. I don't believe any of this is written in stone. I believe that avoiding aspirin to protect my " baby stomach " from bleeding is a good thing but if I thought I was having a heart attack I would certainly take the risk! I used to use ibuprofen in prescription strength (800 mg) for arthritis pain. I don't take that anymore (there are certainly times when it would help) because I don't want to take the risk of stressing my liver. However, if I was facing major reconstructive surgery on a joint and muscle relaxants, etc. were recommended by my orthopedist I would certainly take that risk to my liver. I think we all have to use our heads about these things. I try and avoid the things that could potentially cause a problem but if they were necessary to a particular situation I wouldn't hesitate in the least to do what I or the doctors felt was best for me. Good luck with the possible joint replacement! I have a terribly arthritic left ankle from a severe fracture 20 years ago - fortunately or unfortunately they don't do ankle replacements routinely so I will live with it. Luckily 136 pounds down from my heaviest it is not nearly as much of an issue as it once was! in GA Question about pain meds I know we are allowed vioxx. I take it for my osteoarthritis. My question is what about when we have surgery. I am thinking of hip replacement/knee surgery. What kind of painmeds are we allowed to take for the pain?? What was in the pain pumps?? Is it like when you have bad reflux and you drink sprite/7-up?? (I have not had any caffeine, nor sodas since the mgb.) you can if you need, or what? I know not to take aspririn, nsaids, etc. but if I was having a heart attack I think a bayer would be in order, right?? any information would be appreciated. Dear Deborah, I do not use allopathic medicines either. For pain first aid, two options are: * A flower remedy: Bach Impatiens. (Try a health food store - else order from bach.com) You can use this one drop under the tongue as often as needed - but it is in alcohol; and if that is irritating - you can dilute it in 1/4 cup of water, shake hard 100 times and dose from there. Or you can put a drop on a pulse point like a wrist. * Homeopathic Hypericum - which comes in several potencies. Hypericum 200c is a reasonably strong one, but even the zero potency (called tincture) can help. If your pain has a specific cause, then I would suggest a classical homeopath to select the remedy that will have the best chance of helping YOUR situation of pain. I strained/sprained, perhaps tore some tendons, in my right ankle. Homeopathy first aid option: Get some arnica cream/gel from the nearest health food store that carries any homeopathic remedies and rub some in often. That will help the bruising and tissue damage pain. Then you can use rhus toxicodendron 30C or ruta 30C or both for the tendon injury/pain. > Live in semi small town in central Oregon. I hope you have arnica tablets? Take ONE of them, put in a cup of water, get it to dissolve, and succuss 100 times. This potentizes the water so it is remedy. Just sip when you need it. Phone a pharmacy and tell then to deliver one of those devices people use to grip and handle things at a distance. It's like a stick with a handle one end and pincers at the other and the handle manipulated the pincers. That way you can put arnica on a tissue etc held by pincers to get arnica nearer to your ankle. Phone a friend or social worker or volunteer organization or someone to come over and get you set up where you are more self-sufficient. Now is a good time to yell for help. Consider asking for a wheelchair along with the pincer stuff so as to get around better. > I don’t have any over the counter meds at the house and I declined the > triple strength Tylenol they offered at urgent care. The one I used to drive for did that. All they care about is getting paid. I'd go get cash advance from the client or charge their credit card to more than cover the round trip as a deposit, go buy what they wanted and bring it back, then settle the bill - or credit the card or cash refund - whatever to settle it on arrival back. That way you can get food to heat and eat, Bach Impatiens, Hypericum, Arnica tablets. Pincher stick. Taxi's are available 24/7. Just phone around to find what you want them to get first. Pliers and such may come in handy meantime to help reach stuff. A jacket with pockets to put things in. Good luck! Namaste, Irene -- Irene de Villiers, B.Sc AASCA MCSSA D.I.Hom. Guest guest
Thank you Irene, After I sent the email to ER4YT I almost took a tumble while in my office chair - with wheels - and the light bulb went on. I started scooting around, backwards (in the chair) and it made my world a totally different place. I was able to eat, drink and feed the cat. I still had to drop and crawl some but it was minimal. Last night I did take 2 white willow caps and was able to get to sleep. Ears are still ringing but it's okay. My sister never did show up yesterday, she is like that. I probably won't see her again for a few more days. I'm the one who reaches out to stay in touch. During Katrina I read that text messaging can reach phones that are in places with minimal tower strength so last night I called my cell phone company and asked them if this was true. The gal I spoke with told me that it was true but she couldn't explain why. I said a prayer that my husband had his cell phone turned on and I text messaged him. I went out to my cell phone company's web site and sent the message from there. The thought of doing it from the phone keypad was too daunting. He got the message, left his partner to break camp and haul the RV home, and drove straight home. It took him several hours and it was very late when he got here, but I was grateful. We are in the process of selling our home and moving overseas so that I can stop working. It takes both of our incomes to live here and in order for me to stop working we decided that he should retire and that between his S/S check and the money we will earn from selling the house, we can live OK overseas. Costa Rica is our planned destination. I haven't packed my flower remedies and will have husband help me get them. Great idea, I didn't remember to use them and I have Impatiens. I have hypericum and arnica, too, in strengths from 6 to 200, but couldn't get to them, either. They are packed in a box in a storage area. Now that husband is home I will have him get them for me, too. Same with arnica cream and hypericum spray, infusion, cream, etc. I have them but couldn't get to them and couldn't get the cast and ace bandage off to apply topically. After husband came home I was able to ice and put arnica cream and hypericum spray on ankle and foot but he was so beat that I didn't ask him for anything else. Great suggestion about the rhus toxicodendron 30C or ruta 30C for the tendon injury/pain, will use them when DH gets around to bringing them to me. I wouldn't have remembered those, either. I'm afraid I have overwhelmed my husband with my requests (this morning) so after breakfast he went outside to do some yard work for a few hours. When he surfaces again I will give him another list of requests, with the homeopathic stuff at the top of the list. I found some Magnesium/Vit B1/B6 packets that you mix with water and took one last night. It helped immensely with the pec cramps. I had read in the posts about using Mag and actually remembered to use it. After I hurt myself my mind went to mush just trying to get around and deal with pain, worrying about what I was going to do about my job, and wanting our house to sell quickly. We put the house up for sale 6 weeks ago and got an offer after a few days. We thought we had the house sold so husband quit his job and I turned in my notice. My job is over Oct 31 so at least I had some insurance when I fell. The first buyers recently pulled out when they realized how much work it is to maintain .6 acre heavily treed lot, including over 10 pine trees. The needles are starting to fall and it is quite a job to keep them cleaned up. We take about 10 trailer loads to the landfill each year. Have had lots of people look at the house but no more offers to date. We are going to lower the price significantly in order to get a quick sale. I am sore all over today, foot from pushing myself around, arms from trying to use crutches, arm pits, pecs, hips, gluts, knees, and my infamous ankle. I am so sore and tired that I feel like crying. Husband fed me a partially non-compliant breakfast (store bought quiche) and will undoubtedly fix something non-compliant for lunch but I can't complain too much or he will stop feeding me. He doesn't take orders or constructive criticism well. He is used to giving orders at work and has only been retired a short amount of time and hasn't made the transition. He still thinks he is the boss (grin). Thanks again, Irene. You gave great advice. I hadn't even thought about calling a taxi service. There is one service in Bend and I'm sure that they would have gone to a store for me. There weren't any stores open Sunday night but there were stores open on Monday. Didn't think about the tool, either. I used to have one of those suction cup, grabby tools. I used it to get socks out from behind the dryer, but DH just recently gave it away to the thrift shop. Will definitely buy another one. I'm going to start calling around to find a wheelchair to buy. Am having faith that a cash buyer will make us a good offer on the house and we be on a plane to Costa Rica before Thanksgiving. Thanks again.
