Guest guest
I would be absolutely livid. The papers will be covering this? I would call them ahead of time and tell the reporter that this is a highly controversial issue and that I'm available for an interview. I'd wear my "I'm Vaccine-Free and You Can't Bribe Me" t-shirt at our meeting. Then I would blast the school administration at the next Board of Ed meeting (which is covered by the media) for presuming a vaccine would be safe for my child, for withholding vaccine risk information in their promotional materials for the contest, and for trying to bribe my child. I'd end with asking if my child died from the vaccine, will they take a picture of that and would I get to keep the laptop as a memento of my child as a "winner?" Guest guest
This is sick! Something needs to be done about this - ? Alan? http://www2.chccs.k12.nc.us/education/components/board/default.php?sectiondetail\ id=73134 & threadid=7650 April is Adolescent Immunization Month. Our school nurses and the Orange County Health Department want to offer an incentive to help motivate our adolescents to get vaccinated. There are 3 vaccines that are especially recommended for adolescents. • Meningococcal Vaccine is recommended at 11-12 years of age and again at 16-18 (the second dose is a new recommendation). If not received at age 11-12, 13-18 year olds should receive a dose at the first opportunity. • Tdap (tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis) Vaccine is required for all students who will be entering the 6th grade unless they have had a Td (tetanus/diphtheria) vaccine in the last 5 years. Tdap is recommended for all other adolescents. • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Vaccine (3 doses) is recommended for any student 9 years of age or older who has never been vaccinated. NOW…about the contest… To be eligible for the contest, a student will need to receive at least one vaccine, meningococcal vaccine, between 4-1-11 and 5-31-11. The student will need to take proof of the meningococcal vaccine received to the school nurse by 10:00 AM on 6-1-11. The school nurse will then enter the student in the contest. The student will have 2 entries for having received the meningococcal vaccine. Additionally, if the student receives a Tdap and/or a HPV vaccine between 4-1-11 and 5-31-11, he/she would receive one entry for each when the record is provided to the school nurse. A student receiving all 3 vaccines would be entered 4 times. Again, to enter, the student will need to provide the school nurse with a record of vaccines received between 4-1-11 and 5-31-11and one of those vaccines must be meningococcal vaccine. Records of vaccines received are due to the school nurse by 10:00 AM on June 1, 2011. Later that day a school system administrator will select 3 winners: • A fifth grade winner of an ipod • A middle school winner of an ipod • A high school winner of a laptop Parent(s) of each winning student will be notified. On the following day or so, the superintendent or another administrator will visit the school of the each winner and present the winner with his/her ipod or laptop. The student will be unaware that he/she has won until he/she is presented with the prize. SURPRISE!! We will then take a picture of the winner with his/her prize for the local newspaper. This contest is made possible by a donation from Cora and on in memory and honor of their daughter, , who died of meningococcal disease. The family has chosen to honor 's memory by promoting adolescent vaccinations in the hope that no other family will lose a child to a vaccine-preventable disease. Please help honor by making sure your child is fully vaccinated! Please see your adolescent's regular medical provider or visit the Orange County Health Department to receive needed vaccines. To make an appointment at the Health Department, call 919-245-2400 Hillsborough) or 919-968-2022, option 0 (Chapel Hill)... OR… there will be 3 special clinics held at the Health Department, May 10, 11 and 12, 2011 from 3:00-6:00 PM in the Hillsborough office and May 17, 18 and 19 in the Chapel Hill office. No appointment is necessary for these special clinics. Students will be able to be seen on a walk-in basis for adolescent immunizations. Please note that adolescents can sign for immunizations themselves if they are 16 or older. A parent does not have to be present, although parent presence is encouraged. Questions???
