World to celebrate ‘Liver Day’

By Jill B. Tatoy

Monday, July 18, 2011

EVERY year, Hepatitis kills more than one million people.

The World Hepatitis Day celebrated every July 28 provides an opportunity to

recognize viral hepatitis as a major global health problem in order to advance

prevention and control.

Organizers hope to focus attention on the global story of viral hepatitis, and

the real-life impact of this disease on countless Filipinos.

In Cebu City, physicians will celebrate it in the hopes of improving awareness

of Hepatitis as a potentially fatal disease.

The Cebu Gastroenterology (GI) Group, in cooperation with the Hepatology Society

of the Philippines, celebrates the World Hepatitis Day with a series of

activities lined up.

Activities

There will be a simultaneous launching of liver clinics on July 28 at the

out-patient departments of major hospitals in Cebu City.

Patients with liver disease are invited to have a check-up in the clinics

according to schedule.

By Aug. 1, patients may go to either Chong Hua Hospital or Cebu Doctors’

University Hospital.

On Aug. 3, Cebu Velez College, Perpetual Succour Hospital and Visayas Community

Medical Center will cater to the needs of those patients with liver diseases.

Lastly, by Aug. 5, patients are advised to go to either Cebu City Medical Center

or Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

These clinics alternately help in ensuring the liver patients’ needs in the hope

of amassing a local population patients’ database.

Through these liver check-ups, hospitals may be able to know the possible list

of patients infected with liver disease and check what measures they may have to

take.

Fun run

To cap the activity, the Cebu GI Group will hold a fun run on Aug. 7 with the

theme: “Run for your Liver...Your Liver, Your Life.”

The fun run will begin in Chong Hua Medical Arts Building parking lot at 5:30

a.m., with P300 as registration fee in the 3K, 6K or 12K categories.

Started in 2008, the World Hepatitis Day provides international focus for

patient groups and people living with hepatitis B and C. (PR)
