Here is a good article that gives more detail about Sucanat. I

should clarify that I am speaking about the Sucanat (this name is

owned by a company in Switzerland) that is made by Wholesome Foods,

the one that most of us are familiar with. For all I know this other

company's Sucanat may be as good as Rapadura. At this point I am

hesitant to trust anything with the name Sucanat on it. I need to

look into it further to know for sure. Let me know if you know

anything about this other company from Switzerland. Anyway, here is

the article I was speaking about.

http://www.rwood.com/Questions/q_may_01_2001.htm.

As you will be able to see after reading the article, the brand

Wholesome Foods Sucanat produces refined brown sugar (not whole, un-

separated, dehydrated cane juice). They refine (separate-I guess

they don't refer to their sugar as refined because it is not

bleached, I don't know) it and then add some molasses back to it

(brown sugar). They dry it in the granular form, which we are

familiar with seeing in dehydrated cane juice sweeteners, versus the

typical refined crystallized form that we are used to seeing in the

grocery stores. Sucanat just looks different but it is refined brown

sugar, according to the process that they use to make it. Here are

two links to Wholesome Foods' site that explains the way they make

it, as I have just explained:

http://www.wholesomesweeteners.com/retail/content.htm and

http://www.wholesomesweeteners.com/manufact/natural.htm.

Rapadura is the only brand that I know of, at present, that makes a

truly whole, un-separated, non-refined, dehydrated cane juice

sweetener. I will only buy from them at this point.

You have to read Wholesome Foods packaging carefully to see that it

is not whole, un-separated, dehydrated cane juice anymore. They do a

very good job of leaving you to believe otherwise. You have to know

what the words they are using mean to them to figure it out. I am

definitely ignorant of a lot of the words used in the whole foods/

natural arena and had to do a lot of research to figure all of this

out. I wish that companies would, in consumer terms, plainly put

what it is that they are selling instead of using so many flowery

terms that in the end it sound like a different product than what

they are actually selling.

Here is the link for the company that makes Sucanat in Switzerland,

if you are interested. I don't know if they are associated with

Wholesome Foods or not, or if they just let Wholesome Foods use their

registered trademark name, Sucanat.

Also, here is the link for Rapunzel. They are the company that sells

Rapadura (natural, whole, un-separated, dehydrated cane juice).

http://rapunzel.com/products/

There you have it. That is why I won't buy Wholesome Foods Sucanat,

or any other company's Sucanat, until I find out more information

about their company and how they make their Sucanat. That is all the

information I have at this point. If you know anything else, please

let me know. Whew! I'm out of breath.

Peace and Love of Christ be with you,

Robin :)
