I think i will at least do as the secretary said and call them tomorrow instead of waiting till mon to at least get them familarized with who I am and what I want and begin establishing a contact with someone @ the insurance office and u can bet when and whoever I talk with I will certainly be getting names so that I will hv a contact person. I am just not believing the incompetency of this dr's office staff with them not getting a name of who they r talking to when they r contacting peopel's insurance office. I mean, I am sure they deal in this every day. I swear, I belive something is just not right becasue none of it hs been done very professionaly and u know they deal with insurance companies every day. I am beginning to smell a rat somewhere, but just hvn't figured out why yet. cher > __________________________________________________ >

Guest guest
Cher, I must admit I am baffled by the run around you're getting. I used to be a Medical Assistant before I went on disability. When handling insurance claims, or workers' compensation claims, there was certain forms and that was that. It didn't matter what the treatment was, we filled out the forms for the Dr. to get paid. For medical billing there is another person who comes in at night to do that. But, remember, this is in Canada. We didn't have to deal with different insurance companies all the time. It isn't professional to not get a name. That is the first thing we are supposed to do when talking to anyone at another office. I've always made a policy of getting chatty and chummy with a Drs. nurse or secretary. The power we have is amazing. Ninety-nine percent of the time we tell the Dr. what to do. I know your situation is different and you're already fed-up with the office staff, which I don't blame you. You will have to take the ball now and run with it. Be polite, but stern and firm. Ask the name right away and write it down....ask them to spell it if possible. Once they have to give a name, they are much more careful to do a good job. A little tip for the future, if you have to use another Drs. office, be sure to be really nice to them. They will respond to your kindness. It worked for me everytime. I had my favorite patients, who'd I'd move heaven and earth to get in that very day no matter how booked up we were. Good luck with the insurance company....and be sure to tell them there is a new drug approved for your condition, which you expect them to send the right form for. It will be helpful if you have everything written down, drug names etc. at the time of the phone call so you can refer to it. Write down anything else you want to ask them. Don't start blaming them, that will get you nowhere. Just say there has been a mistake and you want to clear it up. Once again, good luck. Guest guest
Cher, First, a few weeks one way or the other is NOT going to make a huge difference. I understand how you are feeling, but sometimes things just WILL NOT progress as fast as you want. I think it took about 3 months from biopsy to when I was finally on treatment. Expecting to be on treatment by the 14th of this month is sort of unrealistic, even if you only wanted the old combo. Things just don't happen that fast with this disease. This isn't like being diagnosed with a bad cancer, when time is of the essence. You are much better of in the long run to take what time you need to get the treatment you need, the best. Again, this doctor (and his staff) are NOT where you need to be. My first choice for you would be to change doctors to one who is up to date and cares. Some doctor's just don't have any interest in treating HCV. Their interests lie elsewhere, and they only take HCV patients because contracts with the insurance co. says they have to accept referrals. It's obvious they don't even want to know the truth about the drugs, apparently that will just confuse the issues - for THEM. However, if you insist on staying with this doctor you better learn now to stand up and FIGHT for yourself! You won't get any help there. Call the insurance company yourself (by the way, who is your insurance co.?), and document everything. They should have a record of any calls made to them by your doctor's office. However, just assume you are starting from the beginning. Organize your self, thoughts, facts, etc., before you call, all written down. Also the fact that this doctor's nurse has told you that YOU must deal with it, since they will probably tell you the doctor's office must do it. I strongly suspect you are just getting a run around from this nurse, and have been from the start. She doesn't WANT to take the time to deal with this. (Don't expect things to be different once you are on treatment either - if you can't deal with them, change doctor's now!) Tell the insurance company you need whatever special forms need to be filled out. Ask what the procedure is, what needs to be done. Tell them you want the newly approved by the FDA drugs, NOT the old stuff. Be prepared to discuss this with more than one person, be passed around some. Again, the NURSE should be doing this! And write down EVERYTHING! Again, be prepared for them to tell you that the doctor's office should be doing this. If they insist only the doctor's office can arrange this, then ask to file a complaint about the doctor. That may be the ONLY way to accomplish anything. Ask THEM to get you into another GI if that one will not do his job. Do not wait for your appointment to take over info on the approvals of the Peg-Intron and ribavirin. Take them PERSONALLY and drop them off now. Also, you might try contacting Schering-Plough and ask them to send their drug sales rep to see your doctor! (I have met a couple of Schering drug reps and they work on commission, and I find it hard to believe they are not in there pushing their new products!) I do not have an email address for them, but they do have a 1-800 number for what they call " Patient Care Consultants " . Here is what the web site says: In addition to case consultations with your staff, Patient Care Consultants are available to meet directly with you and your patients to address specific questions or concerns. Patient Care Consultants can assist your staff in educating your patients on such topics as: Facts about their disease Goals of therapy The need for self-injection How and when to administer REBETRON Combination Therapy Potential side effects Available patient support services For more information, simply dial 1-800-554-5420 ext. 6003. Your call will be returned within one business day. Patient Care Consultants are available by telephone every day, and in person by appointment It's a long shot, by it can't hurt to call, and see if they can do something. Believe me, they WANT to sell their drugs to you! Next thing to try: Go to this web site: http://www.hepatitisneighborhood.com/ This is Hepatitis Neighborhood, a Priority Health Care site. You will see lots of information here, but click on these two things: 'Become A Patient', and 'Insurance' These people want to sell you your treatment medications so they may be able to do something, light a fire under SOMEONE. In fact, you might try this first, since if they have worked with your insurance company before they may know all they need to know and can handle it. Again, it's worth a shot! Can't hurt anyway. That's all I can think of now. I know I've said it before, finding a different doctor would be the best thing. This is a long-term relationship, and you are not getting of to a good start with this one! Good luck! Good luck!
