Guest guest
http://www.thenews.com.pk/print1.asp?id=153571 SGA to launch anti-Hepatitis drive in Sindh Wednesday, December 24, 2008 Karachi The Sindh Graduates Association (SGA) will launch a campaign against Hepatitis B and C in Sindh, with the support of Mehran Cultural Group, Dubai. A meeting, presided by SGA Chairman Dr Suleman Shaikh was held recently at the Association’s head office. SGA partners, donors and social mobilisation teams, as well as representatives of the Sindh government participated in it. The campaign against Hepatitis B and C demands urgency because studies show that Sindh has the highest number of hepatitis patients in the country. District Qamber, Larkana and Dadu show an alarming number of hepatitis cases. About 7,000,000 people in Sindh are suffering from Hepatitis B or C – around 24,000 of these are in District Qamber alone. The aim of the SGA meeting was to develop the process of sensitisation and awareness about Hepatitis B and C and its repercussions in Sindh. Participants at the meeting felt the need to design a strategy to fight against the disease and to initiate a campaign against it. The meeting was informed that Hepatitis Foundation International Chairperson and CEO Thelma King Thiel wants to join the fight against Hepatisis B and C in Pakistan. Government representative Dr Ghulam Sarwar shared information about facilities in three districts - Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana – and added that expansion in two other districts, Dadu and abad, are to take place in future. Participants of the meeting decided that a training workshop will be organised for 25 to 30 pathologists and technicians (volunteers as well as government servants) with the support and help of Prof. Dr K.A. Shakoor. Participants for the workshop will be selected from all over Sindh and hands-on training will be provided to them so they can serve as focal people in different centres. Necessary kits will also be provided to them for screening purposes. An awareness drive against the disease would be initiated by the SGA social mobilization teams and volunteers.
