Guest guest
Wow . . . your family doc suggested (permanent) crippling could come from doing surgery? That doesn't sound right. Lots of people have bulging discs at that level and the surgery doesn't leave them crippled. That's the level that I had problems at and it was fused - immediate relief when I woke up from surgery. And your PT says rupturing isn't likely because it's bulging? I'd think it's the opposite. Yes, it could be worse than the MRI shows . . . especially if you're not taking any precautions (i.e. limiting your activities) to keep it from progressing. Please don't take this the wrong way, but from reading your post, I'd be looking for some other people in the medical profession to help you. What you've been told is the exact opposite of what my family has dealt with, and how it has turned out (experiences). We've had good success with 4 major surgeries (so far) in 3 different family members, and I was 2 of those. Was there any explanation WHY the PT and the family doc made these comments? Sure doesn't sound like they are very encouraging about possible surgical outcomes. Debbie Dahl Oklahoma

Guest guest
You know, that struck me as odd, too. That has become an extremely common surgery, and, if they were concerned about the location, there are different ways to go in to avoid different areas. I had my L5/S1 removed and because of scar tissue from previous surgeries, they went in through my stomach. They can also do surgery coming up from the bottom of the spine, or from the side. But you can only hear about these options if you go to a GOOD spine surgeon. I would try and get in with someone who knows the more modern techniques. How do you know if they do them - just ask. I would recommend that if you would like to see some good surgeons, plus get info on some modern solutions check out this site - http://www.spine- health.com/find/fi01.html You can click on the " find a doctor " link to look for docs in your area, but I also highly recommend reviewed your condition, you can search bulging discs and herniated discs, and there is tons of good info. You want to be prepared with a list of questions if you do get in to see someone new. Wish you the best of luck and I hope you do feel better soon! Now I'm really not too hot about the idea of surgery. In my whole family I cannot think of one person who has had problems like this so this is new to me. In my " Army family " I know guys that " tank " doors have slammed shut on their backs (with body armor) and other TRUELY painful events like that and they've walked away with a few bulging disk, got injections and were fine. So thank you for the information!!!!
