I'll call the closest health food store in the Robin, I'm not a health professional in any way, shape or form, but I'd be cautious about taking herbal tonics while pregnant. I'd also not go overboard on the greens. " Lots " is probably good as long as it's not hugely more than normal dietary amounts. The reason I'd avoid really large amounts of greens is that plants contain many defensive toxins (phytotoxins) and it's the liver that's responsible for removing them. Consuming very large amounts could: A) further stress your liver if you are having a liver problem result in some of the toxins not getting effectively neutralized because of compromised liver function and dosing the baby with toxins If the greens start to taste bad to you or you get nauseous, stop eating them! It could be your body telling you that either you or the baby can't handle any more. The same general warnings would, I think, apply to the tinctures and tonics. Perhaps even more so since they may be more concentrated. I would *definitely* avoid anything in an alcohol base since that is definitely a further strain on your liver. Robin --------->hi robin, let me preface my suggestion by saying i have no idea if my suggestions are contraindicated with pregnancy, so i'd recommend finding out before pursuing them (or any other supplement). having said that, i'd recommend LiverCare and lipoic acid for treating a diseased liver. LiverCare is a powerful liver cleanser/healer that i used with my chihuahua when he had *extremely* elevated liver enzymes last winter. i know of others who have used it on animals with liver disease with great success. it's actually made for humans, but works well for dogs, too you can read about it, and order it here: http://www.vitamin-resource.com/catalog/detail.cfm?Item_No=4098 Main Components of LiverCareR Capers (Capparis spinosa) - Well-documented hepatic stimulant and protector. Improves the functional efficiency of the liver. Wild chicory (Cichorium intybus) - Powerful hepatic stimulant, increases bile secretion, and promotes digestion. Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) - Promotes liver and kidney health and has shown hepatoprotective activity in cases of toxicity induced by drugs and chemicals . Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) - Tonic for heart and liver. Regulates hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. Negro Coffee (Cassia occidentalis) - Digestive and hepatic tonic. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) - Stimulative tonic for the liver. Tamarisk (Tamarix gallica) - Hepatic stimulant and also provides digestive support. it's an ayurvedic formula, and seems to be well-researched. i don't know if any of the herbs are contraindicated with pregnancy, so i'd suggest talking to either the manufacturere (Himalaya USA) or the distributor (link above) Joanne Lindon - she's a straight shooter, imo, and will provide you any info she can. btw, i'm taking small doses now as i feel my liver is sluggish. lipoic acid is, among other things an anti-oxidant that our bodies produce (but probably not in adequate quantities to protect a diseased liver). it's also been successfully used to treat liver poisoning. LiverCare, lipoic acid and Sam-E were the three primary supplements i used to treat my dog's liver problem. i basically followed the protocol an online acquantance used with her mini schnauzer, who was in much worse condition than my dog. both recovered fully. Guest guest
Thanks , Actually, sInce transitioning to an NT style diet I haven't felt like eating as many greens. I think I ate so many salads over the years as a raw vegan, I'm enjoying the healthy fat and protein foods now. They fill me up and there seems no room is left for the greens. My mother is a retired nurse and she too mentioned the possibility of adding toxins to the baby by taking a herbal tonic. Therefore, I think I'll call Dr. Todd and inform him of my problem, since he is the one that introduced me to NT. I was re-reading his report he did on me back in February and he did mention improving my liver function in it. I just must of over looked it. He may have a suggestion for me, diet or otherwise in dealing with this. Guest guest
Hi Robin, I use to have a Kombucha mushroom years ago, but I remember getting rid of it when I got pregnant for baby #4. I think I remember the info. I had on it said not to drink it while pregnant. I could be wrong though, it was about 7 years ago now. I did call and talk to Dr. Todd and he told me to get hydrochloric acid and microbialic enzymes, as he feels my liver enzymes are elevated because of the protein I've added to my diet. I haven't eaten animal sources in 10 years, so my body may not know how to utilize them properly. It makes sense, cuz when I went for my last visit to the midwife, the stripe she has me pee on showed a blue line, which I guess means I'm spilling protein. He didn't recommend taking a liver tonic either, as it'd be to toxic for the baby.
