is the

evidence they are so bad? My SO won't take CLO, it makes him burpy. Since

we don't have much budget for truly grassfed products, I figure molecularly

distilled salmon capsules are better than nothing.

-------> Daphne, i agree that molecularly distilled fish oil is probably the

next best thing if you cannot obtain a reasonable amount of EFAs from your

food. I use Natural Factors wild salmon oil for the times that i DO feel i

need EFAs (beyond what i'm getting from my food, which is mostly in the

winter months). it's molecularly distilled and i believe the peroxidation

value is around 1%. Just be sure your SO take wheat germ oil or some other

natural vit. E product along with it to help neutralize any free radical

damage the oil might do. (i use standard process wheat germ oil)

re evidence, do a medline search - there's ample evidence as how easily

oxidizable multiple double bond fatty acids are. or any biochemistry

textbook would explain the phenomenon as well. better yet, get mary's book

" Know Your Fats " - i'm sure she covers it as well :)

The second hour of Cary Nossler radio show yesterday had Dr Barry Sears, the

Zone Dr. His newest book is about the " Miracle " of fish oils. He has come up

with his own product, a pharmaceutical grade of distilled CLO. His reasoning is

that we have polluted so much of the earth, that the only way we can avoid

eating our own pollutants is by distilling them.

Even as he was saying this, my own instincts were saying no way. How do I know

that what he has decided to throw out is not bound up with something that is

essential. It seems like another recipe for fractionalized, damaged food.

However, he went on to great lengths to praise the value of CLO, but he said

several times it is the worst tasting food ever concocted by the human race

several times. His product presumably doesn't have a bad flavor. At the local

health food outlet, I can get cherry flavored CLO that has a pretty decent taste

to it. Solves that problem.

One thing he said I thought was great:

There are essential fatty acids

Essential Proteins

But there is no essential Carbs....

(I think I have this right, I will be listening to the program again to get

several points cleared up. I have the file as an mp3 now)

Personally, it seems so far to me that the benefits of omega-3s are so much

that it is better to have significant amounts along with substantial sat fat

intake for utilizaiton and anti-oxidants for protection, rather than not have

them.

I am generally against supplements, because they often isolate a nutrient

from the things that make it work right in the food. I think cod liver oil

is good only because it is more or less impossible to find access to the

variety of organ meats primitives ate, and most of us would have a hard time

eating organ meats every day, and a much worse time trying to feed them to

our kids. I almost bought chicken liver once, but it looked intimidating.

Salmon capsules wouldn't have the A & D in cod liver oil, which I think is the

primary reason for taking them, but if he is deficient in omega-3s, I suppose

maybe a small amount might be fine, but not to exceed a reasonable amount you

could get from food.

Though eating free-range high-DHA eggs daily and sea food a couple times a

week would probably do the trick.

" What can one say of a soul, of a heart, filled with compassion? It is a

heart which burns with love for every creature: for human beings, birds, and

animals, for serpents and for demons. The thought of them and the sight of

them make the tears of the saint flow. And this immense and intense

compassion, which flows from the heart of the saints, makes them unable to

bear the sight of the smallest, most insignificant wound in any creature.

Thus they pray ceaselessly, with tears, even for animals, for enemies of the

truth, and for those who do them wrong. "
