May is National Hepatitis Awareness Month

Remembering

Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg

July 28, 1925 - April 5, 2011

Please join the Hepatitis B Foundation in remembering our dear friend, champion

and co-founder, Dr. Baruch Blumberg who died from a sudden heart attack on April

5, 2011. His discovery of the hepatitis B virus and invention of the first

vaccine, which resulted in his receiving the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1976,

has been among the most important in the history of science and medicine.

Nothing will be the same without him, but so much has changed because of him.

Hepatitis B Foundation leaders traveled to China for the launch of HBF's new

Gateway to Care public health program in Haimen City, China on April 8,2011.

Haimen City has the highest incidence of liver cancer due to hepatitis B. This

multi-year, citywide campaign aims to increase awareness among the one million

residents, educate 1,000 providers, and test 5,000 pregnant women (and link all

who are infected to medical care). The program is made possible by a $400,000

educational grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. Learn more.

Telbivudine During Pregnancy Safely Reduces Perinatal HBV Transmission

Transmission of the hepatitis B virus from infected mothers to their newborns is

substantially reduced with telbivudine therapy during pregnancy, without any

apparent adverse effects, a team in China has shown. Based on study results, the

are at high risk of transmitting HBV infection to their newborns. " Learn more.
