I know personally that I gained weight and saw my blood lipids go in the wrong direction on a low fat, high complex, whole food diet. It might be that people who have done well on high complex grains have kept enough fat in the diet to modulate the insulin response. Also insulin resistance increases with age, so I'd imagine that younger people can tolerate a higher carb diet than older people on the whole. Those who champion whole grains, I advise you not to overdo it and to keep good quality fats and protein in your diet. I also urge you to take a look at the nutritional breakdown of even the whole grains -- it's not that impressive. Now veggies are another matter. A lot more nutritional bang for your biological buck.
