BACKGROUND

The U.S. ranks 41st among nations in maternal and infant mortality,

with African-American infants dying at a rate of nearly 14 per

1,000 live births. In some states, the incidence is nearly 20. In

addition, African-American women are almost four times more likely

to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women. This

disparaging reality does not include the enormity of permanent injuries

suffered by both mother and child surrounding maternity.
