Guest guest
I don't know about Atlantic salmon but the Coho and an other kind swim up a stream not far from where I work, the girl salmon deposit their eggs and the boy salmon, when they get there deposit their sperm and it washes over the eggs. They are not duking it out for the right to do so. So I think this problem need some further thought. ine in Woodinville WA -----Original Message----- From: Marla [mailto:talithakumi@...] Sent: Friday, August 16, 2002 4:47 PM Subject: GM salmon (was triglycerides (was Carbs and physical activity) ----- Original Message ----- > > > > ->i believe that's happened here in maine in one of our coastal salmon > > farms, but i haven't read or heard of it happening on the pacific coast. i > > think the farmed salmon were genetically engineered to grow faster or > > something, and are larger than the wild atlanit salmon (which is on the > > endangered species list, IIRC) and the concern is that the big, > fast-growing > > escapees will out-compete the wild ones for food, and interbreed and > > basically be the end of the wild atlantic salmon. > ### I heard that GM Atlantic salmon had escaped in eastern Canada. I think the problem with the interbreeding thing is that the GM salmon are bigger and they may compete regarding breeding. Since they are bigger it's believed that the GM salmon will win out against the smaller wild salmon. The problem is that those GM salmon are supposedly sterile. So there won't be enough fertile salmon to reproduce. I guess the sterile ones get all the action, but are shooting blanks. Yikes. Guest guest
Hi ine: I'm certainly not an expert on salmon, or fish for that matter, but I got that information from http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/harvest/etc/video.html You can watch a short video on it. It's been quite a while since I watched it, so may have some details wrong, but the idea of problems with spawning is an issue for GM fish. Of course I don't know how accurate PBS is either.
