The author of " Mutant Message Down Under " was pretty

much unmasked as a fraud. The book is fiction. I read

it and was very excited by it, so this was

disappointing to me. What happened was that the

Australian authorities had no idea who these people

were--in this day and age, there really aren't whole

tribes of people wandering around unaccounted for. Not

in an industrialized country like Australia. So people

started investigating, and the book turned out to be

not true. However, there are other people who say that

the author only 'fessed up to protect the hidden

people she had traveled with. So who knows.

Marija Gimbutas was one of the archaelogists who

unearthed the (neolithic) Goddess culture of Old

Europe. She was an amazing scholar--spoke 12

languages! Her books are incredible. I had the

privilege to hear her speak a number of times before

she died. The question of why all the representations

are of fat women was asked once. She said that

probably like today there would be some fat people and

some thin people. The statues were not protraits--not

personal representations of any individual--but

emphasized what was symbolically important. So statues

with hands on the breasts represent sustenance; hands

on the belly (womb) would indicate generative

qualities, etc. Bird-headed Goddess women with

extended egg-buttocks would place humans in a whole

matrix of cosmic association with the regenertaive

powers of the universe. But the way the figures are

sculpted is an accurate rendering of the way fat

accumulates on the human body--so there had to have

been some fat women around. And they obviously weren't

hated like in our culture.
