NAYS distributes booklets regarding Hepatitis

City Reporter

Islamabad—National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) Thursday launched a

program, under which a small booklet entitled “Hepatitis B and C, Aahm Malomaat”

,will be distributed in the schools and colleges throughout the country.

Initially 3,000 copies of the booklet are published as this is part of NAYS

community education and awareness program.

Pakistan is among the countries with high prevalence of Hepatitis B and C.

According to an estimate 7.4 percent Pakistani population is suffering with

either Hepatitis B or C.

When contacted, President NAYS Aftab Ahmed said due to the lack of awareness

about the disease, the number of infected people is increasing each year.

This booklet will help to create awareness about the disease, he said, adding

this booklet contains 32 pages with basic introduction to disease and also some

most frequently asked questions by the layman and the answers to these

questions.

NAYS is also working on other similar projects, he went on to add.

It is pertinent to mention here that unsafe drinking water, unscreened blood

transfusion and the rampant use of used syringes have spread hepatitis, making

it one of the biggest concerns for the country’s health managers.

Hepatitis B and C are global health problems as worldwide 350 million people are

carriers of the Hepatitis B virus. The virus causes a deadly liver disease

having same mode of transmission as AIDS. Millions of Pakistanis have been

infected with the deadly virus, but no public department or agency has accurate

information about the number.

Medical experts believe that the Hepatitis B virus was spreading fast because of

ignorance among the patients and lack of proper preventive measures.

Hepatitis B, C and D are caused through unsterilized syringes, sexual relation,

and blood transfusion and from mother to newborn baby.
