Guest guest
Hi , You say you've tried antihistamines for itching? Have you tried diphenhydramine? I used to have a terrible, terrible problem with itching. My wife couldn't sleep at night because of my scratching all night. I tried all sorts of things, endlessly, with no results. Went on for months and months with little sleep and much physical torment. When I started taking the diphenhydramine, the itchiness improved greatly. I take a cool shower every morning, don't dry off too much, and then put non-fragrant lotion on my body. The itching is hell. I'm so glad to be better in that regard and hope you find relief. I know what you're going through. Your friend, Gene

Guest guest
Anne....I like when you send pics....I love pics...I have thousands....my family freaks out on how many I have...i always have my camera ready...gotta catch all those Kodac moments!! I love web sites with pic too...how many here have their own web sites? My friends pounded it into my head, as to how to use my scanner, not very long ago. But if you asked them about it lately, they would tell you they created a monster, because I love to scan things in to show people!! It actually worked out pretty good recently because I sent my original oxygen bag back to the company I bought it from, because it broke at the beginning of April 2000 (ripped and NOT repairable) I sent it back on June 22, 2000 --had a huge ear infection for 14 weeks, so life and that bag were the least of my concerns for quite awhile! The company said they never received it, but I had the receipts and the confirmation number that told me it arrived 2 days later. If I hadn't had my scanner, I would never have seen my oxygen bag again... (the bag cost me $177.00 with tax, and shipping/handling charges in September 1998... same bag we carried on the ambulances, so it should have lasted MORE than 18 months! Especially at that price!!! But because I could prove that I sent it back, they found it. And I got my brand new bag by UPS yesterday.... it has a lifetime guarantee with the manufacturer. Now I have 2 oxygen bags! Cool huh! it's hard to juggle everything and still give lots of time to my youngest who has spina bifida...she'll be 3 sept 23rd...time sure flies...My oldest starts high school next month. What do the doctors tell you about Spina Bifida? One of my best friends... Mike had spina bifida... he was 26 yrs. 10 months old exactly when he died. His parents were told over and over that I would not make it through the night, to 6 mos., to 5 yrs old, etc., etc. Mike actually died of Myocarditis (major bacterial infection in the actual heart muscle).. it was actually a MAJOR malpractice incident. He didn't tell me about ALL the symptoms he was having, because I would have gone to Florida and dragged to the ER if he had!!! I talk to him 3 days before he died. He had called to find out about dehydration due to illness. The next day I guess he started having severe pain in his left arm, shoulder, etc.... those red flag symptoms of it being cardiac. He did go to the doctor and was told that they thought he had cancer... did blood tests, gave him pain pills and told him to come back for the results the following Monday (he was seen in the clinic on Friday.) He died Saturday evening. I got the phone call, I got to tell his parents, and brothers. I used to tease Mike that my birthday was on every phone in America, yet no one ever could remember it. He made it memorable that year, he was buried in Eau (where I had just moved to) on my 27th birthday! Do they still say that Spina Bifida kids won't live to a certain age? My understanding is that Mike was one of the oldest surviving spina bifida patients. I miss him lots, but you probably figured that out by now. When I got in engaged, Mike said that he had to approve the guy before I could accept the ring, or say YES! Then when my engagement was called off.... he jumped for joy. His whole family knew of me as "the girl Mike was going to marry!" Sorry, didn't mean to go all mushy on you! Love Always, Anne I have a picture of Mike and I, but I just spent the last hour looking for it, but can't.... it is really bugging me now. Guess this means I should clean my house huh? Re;Tessa....she's fine...she just can't walk...other than that she's great...very smart, no shunt, no meds , strong immunity.....some things can change with regards to her lesion, arnold chiari malformation (brain stem is pulled into the spinal area a bit),....we dont worry about things like that until they actually happen...years ago children used to die younger because they didnt always close the opening in the back (which can vary greatly with each child)...when I get time to put it on my site...I scanned a pic of her back ...you can see it..... anyhow...kids with sb died usually from complication associated with infection and hydrocephalus.....my lil angel was lucky and didnt have to get shunted she was close to it....but made it through....swelling went down...some die from side effects of medications which affect the heart, kidneys etc..that still can happen ...but it can happen to anyone else as well. she has above average intelligence i'm sure...my oldest daughter says she has 3 languages...her grown up talk, her humorous talk (she keeps us rolling laughing all the time) and her baby talk....she is a treasure...her name spelled backwards is asset ...which she is my best asset! ttfn Sheena;) p.s. send mikes pic when u find it! Guest guest
Hi Group, I haven't been on in a while......trip away with just my mom and sisters (my mom decided for her birthday she wanted to take herself and her daughters in a trip, who are we to argue!).....Happy New Year to those of you who celebrate. Also: --Happy Birthday to and , hope it was filled with fun! --To Diane and , hope you are feeling well and drinking your fluids! --Good luck Kelli, I hope everything works out for you, sounds like you are doing all you can to make it right for you and your kids, whatever the outcome. --Re. why women cry, I don't agree that it is a weakness. I think it's a strength to be able to show, share and let emotions go. I tell my husband that sometimes he looks like he could use a good cry. Maybe he wouldn't need so many trips to the chiropractor if he let it all go with tears rather than leaving it to tense up in his back! --Also, Sheryl, does it get easier as they get older? I think it gets different. It's easier when they can start feeding themselves, and can get around, but it gets harder because you have to keep an eye out in a different way. When the kids get more verbal and can ask questions, it's easier because they can talk about stuff rather than cry but harder because you have to answer the questions. So it's all different. I agree with (oops, I forgot who, sorry), whomever said that when some of the kids could walk and one couldn't it was hard, still shlepping a stroller, etc. (In my case, Eli didn't walk full time until he was well beyond 3 years old and he weighed 40 pounds or so! Wanna feel my muscles?!) Anyway, like I said, it gets different. And every stage has good stuff combined with challenges -- for the typical kids in the mix, and the kids with differences. For our group, Eli is doing very well. He has been horseback riding every Friday with Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, and it's wonderful - for both of us! My other kids are doing well too. I just started working part time, as if I had nothing better to do! So life is hectic. Hope you are all enjoying the fall. Uh oh, gotta start thinking about Halloween. I remember my first Halloween after the twins were born, they were about 5 weeks old, I went as a zombie -- no costume or make-up needed!! Guest guest
Hi Granny and everyone..thought I'd write a catch up note of my own...Granny you made me laugh with your " sitting around sulking " comment...isn't it the truth that some weeks are like that. Congratulations with setting limits with brother. I'm sorry that he disappointed I am glad you said he needed to stay elsewhere. My Miss Meghan is 4.4 now and totally into herself...she's potty trained pretty much and tries to copy everything her 6y.o. (nda) sister does....she's vocalizing alot...some words are clear and she resorts to sign if we are truly being dense and either not getting or saying no to what she wants. My current dilemna is...she goes to special ed preschool half day...actually the class she's in is for speech delayed......and I just don't think she's getting enough stimulation in terms of pre-K learning......I have to meet with her teacher when she goes back and am considering some sort of change..as in maybe just putting her into a regular pre-school setting part-time.....not such a bad dilemna, just what is occupying me at this time! Happy New Year to Everyone! I enjoy your stories...

We went out with some friends for dinner last night and the chef at this particular place (which they tell me is the second best restaurant in FL but I have my own opinion lol) he feels EVERYTHING needs some kind of sauce. LOL oh well we did have a great time. I think this was the first time we have gone out with grown-ups in ages. So sorry to hear about brother some people never grasp the concept of being considerate. Don't feel too bad about your fridge I have been there :-) we used a bungee cord to keep the door shut lol also came at a time when was opening the fridge and removing all condiments to the floor lol and not just the containers they were THE contents of the jars. I think he saw it as finger painting on the floor lol Anyway I do hope things start looking up for you and the year 2001 is a great year! Guest guest
Janet and Steve, Trey is going through a rough time. Not all kids with ds are as fortunate as your neice and my son at birth. But I will tell you one thing I noticed, these babies with DS are tough little cookies. The kids seem to bounce back quickly after heart surgery, too. Trey and his parents have a few rough months in front of them...then life will get easier. The medical problems are not indicative of functioning level, either. I see older kids with DS who faced similiar problems when they were babies..you should see these kids now!! Somehow, I think I missed your first post here. Welcome to the Upsndowns group...I look forward to hearing more about Trey in the future Upsndowns Owner Honorary Cyber Godmother to many!! Guest guest
Hello Everyone, It's here from Canada. I've finally caught up reading my e-mails. We've had terrible computer virus problems, but have installed Norton's latest Anti-virus program & hope that will take care of things. Yesterday I decided not to send out Christmas cards - It's just too late. Besides you are the ones I really consider my friends - so many of my actual friends & family just have no idea what my life is like - you are the ones I truly realte to. Marisa - I read your report from getting Brook officially dx'd & I was amazed to learn about the myoclonic seizures being a major factor in the autism dx. had myoclonic seizures from age 9 mos. - 2 yrs. She's been seizure-free since then. We have had a psychologist rule out autism saying that Steph is just too low-functioning to qualify. We will be seeing a developmental ped. to get a 2nd opinion & I will be sure to mention the seizure part of her med. history. Irma - So sorry to hear about your MIL. We missed you & are glad to have you back with us. - Thanks for the lovely offer to send Christmas cards. I didn't respond as I'm in Canada. I hope everything is O.K. now with JJ & the blood incident. Many prayers for your son, Chris. I admire you & your family sooooooo much! What a cook you are! CK - Thanks for the updates on Ian. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday together. You are another family I have great admiration for. I'm sorry I won't get a Christmas postcard out to Ian - maybe during the holidays or in the New Year. Leah - I know you have been having difficult personal times recently. I wish you tons of luck & moral support as you start your new life with your children. Now for my news: is going to require hip surgery. We see the specialist in Jan. I've already e-mailed Terry privately & she's been very helpful so far. I'll keep everyone posted as things develop. At least it's not life-threatening as the leukemia was! I wish everyone a wonderful happy holiday season. May we all concentrate on the things that really matter - family, friends & lots of love & kindness for all we come in contact with. I've been struggling with depression trying to be everything to everyone. It feels good to put my thoughts in words & now I'll try to live up to them! Joan - Thanks so much for starting this list & giving me a place to go for love & support when needed. Love & {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}} to Everyone,
