Guest guest
" Philippines Targets Immunization of 2.3 Million Newborns vs. Hepatitis B " Asia Pulse (09/04/06) The Philippine Department of Health (DoH) has launched a massive immunization campaign that seeks to reach 2.3 million Filipino newborns with the hepatitis B vaccine. " I urge mothers of newborns to have their babies vaccinated against Hepa B to give their babies a head start against liver cancer, " said Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III. The hepatitis B vaccine has been included in the regular immunization schedule for children since 1992; however, budget constraints have kept it from being used nationwide. This year, the DoH approved a supplemental budget to help with the vaccine, and it also revised its schedule of hepatitis B immunization for babies, with the first dose given within 24 hours of birth and the second and third doses administered at six and 14 weeks, respectively. Liver cancer is the No. 4 cause of cancer in the Philippines and the No. 2 cause of cancer deaths there.
