The reason it would work is carbs+trytophan would raise your serotonin levels.

Trouble is, milk is a complete protein source, and your muscles might get all

the tryptophan. A pure carb snack is I think more effective, because it raises

your insulin level and shuts down most other processes so the tryptophan can get

to your brain and make some serotonin. I have heard that melatonin works, and

5-htp works for me.

Hi,

In a recent discussion with a friend about a snack to help a person

with insomnia, milk was mentioned as a good idea to try. Carbs plus

the tryptophane(sp?) in the milk are supposed to induce sleep via

relaxation. I thought this might not work, because the milk is also a

high protein drink. Wouldn't the protein cancel out the carb effect?

I've used milk as a sleep inducer.

Milk always worked for me (back whan I drank it!). I don't think it was

just the

carbs: milk is a soporific all on it's own. Puts babies to sleep big time~

But I found that a lot of

my insomnia was hunger too: if you eat at 5pm or so, by 10pm you

are hungry, which makes some of us wake up! I use crackers and

goat cheese a lot to make me sleepy too.

You can also buy some hops and put them in a pillow. Hops are

a narcotic: I've read the harvesters have to wear masks to keep

from falling asleep during harvest. One company out here

sells a little rabbit stuffed with hops to put kids to sleep!

Hops grow really, really easily in your yard too. You can

buy them at any beer supply store.

Back when I had problems with insomnia I found doing a castor oil pack over

the liver always worked. Soak a cloth (I used terry cloth but the

instructions call for flannel) in castor oil and place it over your liver

area. Place plastic over that and then put a heating pad or hot water

bottle over that. I think you leave it for 1/2 hour or an hour. Messy but

did the trick.
