Well, sort of. It was discovered that if you fed rats something like half

their body weight in saccharine for a long time, it would elevate their

incidence of bladder cancer. However, what really happened is that Reagan

and the head of Searle were buddies, and Searle wanted to create a market

for their artificial sweetener aspartame, so when the FDA didn't cooperate,

Reagan fired the commissioner and found someone who would be more cooperative.

Since then many people and institutions have backpedaled from the idea that

there's anything wrong with saccharine, and more and more questions about

aspartame has come to light.
