Guest guest
Joanne, Ken- Virgin is the best. Basically, you want an oil that has been processed the least, and the least destructively -- the least heat, the least pressure, the least filtration. Tropical Traditions and Coconut Oil Supreme, available at www.coconut-info.com and www.coconutoil-online.com, offer the best two oils on the market. Personally I prefer Coconut Oil Supreme. I'm not sure how the two stack up in terms of price compared to the Spectrum oils, but they do get cheaper the more you buy at once. >And we are wondering about the >difference between using organic, expeller pressed, unrefined oil and virgin >oil. Guest guest
Fife in his book on coconut addresses this issue. He speaks of 2 major categories of CO - virgin and RBD (refined, bleached, and deoderized). RBD is made from dried aged coconut (known as copra), and high temps and chemical solvents are used to produce this oil. But it is still considered a healthy food oil because the fatty acids in CO are resistant to heat. The advantage of this oil is that it is odorless, whereas the virgin oil has the fragrance of coconut. He mentions that some CO is hydrogenated, and not always marked as such. But the hydrogenated oil melts at 96F, whereas regular CO melts at 76F, so you can tell the difference - avoid the hydrogenated. Peace, Kris , gardening in harmony with nature in northwest Ohio > Hi. Guest guest
Hello. Thanks for the information shared about coconut oils. Wanted to pass on some more information we received when we called Spectrum Naturals to find out about their product. They have discontinued making refined coconut oil, and now have unrefined organic expeller pressed coconut oil available. They describe the oil as being wet-milled, pressed from fresh coconuts. They said they are making the unrefined oil due to consumers' requests for this product, and specifically mentioned the influence of the work of Enig and others in bringing about this change. Thanks again. We've found this discussion group helpful as we begin following the nourishing traditions ways. Take care, Joanne and Ken

Thanks for the legwork so that we now know what to expect once old stock is sold. Good to see the realization spreading. Wanita
