Guest guest
Sewine flu in Iraq kills 5 since early JanuaryMonday, February 7th 2011 10:58 AM Baghdad, Feb. 7 (AKnews) - Swine flu deaths Iraq has increased to 5 cases from 2 in a week ago with cases of infections increased to 72 from 61, according to the Iraqi Health Ministry. The Iraqi Health Ministry says it has taken preventive measures in Baghdad and other provinces to limit the spread of swine flu. In January 2011, two deaths caused by the H1N1 virus were recorded in Iraq with 61 cases of infections. The new figures were released by the Iraqi Health Ministry a week after recording the 3 new deaths caused by the flu in Najaf, Basra and Baghdad provinces. No case of infection with the H1N1 virus has been reported in the northern region of Kurdistan in 2011. Ihsan Mouhammed Jaafar, director of the public health department in the Ministry told AKnews that the among the five dead is one Pakistani national who had visited Iraq during the Shia religious ceremonies in Najaf. During the Shia religous rites and ceremonies of Ashura and Arba'iniya, millions of pilgrims from around the world visit the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala to mourn the death of Imam Hasan and Hussein - the grandsons of prophet Mohammed. The recent three deaths were the result of belated transfer of the infected persons with the flu to hospital due to the similarity of the flu to regular winter flu, Jaafar said. Had the patients been transferred to hospital their lives could have been saved because, according to Jaffar, the treatment of influenza is available in Iraq " in large quantities " .
