The five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute will be used to develop better methods of detecting the cancer, officials said. Hawaii’s liver cancer incidence and death rates are the nation’s highest, partly because those with hepatitis are more prone to develop the cancer. Immigrants from Asia, which has some of the world’s highest hepatitis rates, are more likely to be infected.
