Guest guest
Hi, Sorry to hear that your having such a hard time. I wish I could help, but I've never had a lower back surgery. I CAN tell you that 3 wks is not long at all. Hang in there. I hope that someone else will answer soon that can give better advice. I just wanted to wish you well. Is there hope yet? I had this same surgery, the second time in May of 2000. It will take longer than 3 weeks. It is important that your doctor know your pain level so he can make adjustments. He should be able to prescribe something that will help you sleep and reduce your pain. Getting sleep is very important to your recovery. Also reducing your pain level will allow you to move which is important. I was up and walking within a week of being home. This was my 3rd surgery so I knew moving would help my rehabilitation, help me feel better, and to be blunt help your bowels to move. The numbness will be there awhile possibly as long as 6 months. I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Did your doctor prescribe a back brace? This will help you to relieve pain when getting up and down, and moving. Lifting your kids and driving is off the list for awhile. I think driving I was advised as non for 6 weeks. I'm sure others here can provide similar or different experiences. Recovery is not the same for everybody. Dave Reading, PA

Guest guest
Hi, What type of surgery did you have? I had a L5-S1 disectomy a couple years ago and was told when I woke up after surgery my pain would be gone. That did not happen! It took 4 weeks to start feeling better but a full 8 weeks before the pain and numbness was better. I over did it though and was back in pain a couple weeks after that and the disc re- herinated. If you had a fusion the healing process is much longer and like Dave said the numbness will take a long time. Fusions take a year to heal and I've heard from others it is a really slow process and a lot of the time you have worse pain for awhile. With either a fusion or a discectomy you won't be able to lift anythng more then 5 pounds for a while and no driving. I know how hard it is when you have young kids; my youngest was only 1 when I had surgery and he needed to stay at my moms for almost a month, then his aunt came and stayed with us to help me. Hang in there and make sure your Dr knows what's going on, he should prescribe you something to help with the pain and sleep problems. I know my surgeon said to walk as much as possible and that would speed the healing process up. Start walking slowly though and build up; lisen to your body. Best of luck to you!!
