Guest guest
Hi, its here. I put Lily's diaper outside of her cast. I have found that with girls you can shove a poise pad up there and it soaks up so much that I usually only change her actual diaper when she goes number 2. I buy the walmart brand extra long poise pad (I think they are called Options)and I shove part of the pad up the back of her cast and reach it around to the front and shove it up there. I then put on her diaper outside the cast and she has never leaked once. The pads actually work way better than diapers if you ask me. They can soak up so much. That has been what has worked best for me. Just FYI. Guest guest
gail............. lexi turned two in november...i am attempting potty training, but she is a stubborn one!! i will try the pullups and loosen a strap at the bottom and see if i can't get something under there. there is just sooo much padding, it is tough. tracey brace question ok, well with lexi in her cast.......diapering is definitely a bigger issue to me now than it was in the cast. any others here that braced have any suggestions for diapering withiut having to remove the brace each time? i can say for certain, i cannot tuck it under like i did in the cast. have any of you just diapered over the brace like some do for the cast? any suggestions are welcome as i don't think i want to remove this thing with every diaper change!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrtracey
Guest guest
At the time of 's brace, we weren't potty training, but they were easier to use. Maybe talk to your brace guy aobut shaving down some of the padding would help. Guest guest
Tracey, What works best for Madison and me is to just diaper over the brace with a pull up instead of regular diapers. When it wasn't a choice, when she was in her first brace at 7 months, we did have to remove the brace for each diaper change. I just couldn't figure out another way to do it. I think Lexi is old enough for pull ups though, if memory serves me correctly. Hope you're able to figure something out that will work out for y'all. Guest guest
Madison outgrew her first brace (8 mths) in just 6 weeks, the two taht followed she was 18 moths-5 mths and 28 mths-31/2 mths....I think it just all depends on the current growth of your child. I think it's always best to refer any concerns to your ortho or orthotist. Guest guest
Hi Joy Evan is scheduled for his 4th cast on the 22nd, so if they work you in maybe well see you then. Good luck with the skin and cast issue-hope it does work out that she gets the brace next go around. Does anyone know if he uses the table to do the brace molds as well? Or is bracing something we can do through our local children's hospital? Well in any case I'm wondering too if maybe we can just have her fitted for a brace here until we go back there mid Sept. to have her last cast & brace measurements done, does anyone know how long that would take? And if the table aids the Dr.'s at Shriner's in bracing as well? I'm afraid to stop going there because I love Dr. & have faith in his treating her, my husband was wondering if we'd get the same bracing done here as there. Guest guest
Well I've spoke with both Shriner's & Children's now & we're having it removed today locally & x-rayed. I'll be speaking w/Shriner's Mon. to see about hopefully getting her apt. pushed up a little, they said it probably wouldn't be a problem so that's good. Also hear that Dr. is very particular about his bracing so we'll defintely not be having anyone else do that here, we'll just be waiting to do it in Erie next month.. Dr. Sander's has worked miracles on her & so I'm keeping my faith in him! Anyway, things have calmed down for us a little bit lately so we'll be able to kit better.. hope you & your kiddos are all good! ~Joy & Sol. > > Hi Everyone, we've definitely been pretty incognito online this past > month has been crazy busy w/summer & such. Guest guest
Joy, They had me actually stick something down in the cast (they NEVER normally recommend this) to peel the lining from his skin. I used a rubber spatula to get down in there and I think I got it all separated, thank goodness! His skin was so dry and in some areas starting to break down. He looks a lot better now, but I can definitely say this has soured me on the waterproof casts. I am going to ask for plaster this next time around. It's just not worth the hassle. I have no idea what to tell you about the brace as we have not hit that hurdle yet. My plan is to stick with Shriners because I trust Dr. K and I don't trust anyone here in VA.. Guest guest
Hi Joy I'm not sure about Erie, but SLC does use the table to make Owen's braces. It is pretty much the same procedure as the casting, sedation and intubation- traction. I had the same thoughts as you about getting the brace made locally, but before we found SLC we had four different braces made from 2 different orthotists (including our local Shriners) and none were as good as what we got from SLC. And I too just trust those doctors so much more than any others we have seen (and we've seen a lot!) As far as time goes, the team at SLC was amazing for us! Owen was molded thursday morning and by that afternoon they had the brace made and then had a second one made by the next morning as they wanted to try something different for him! I really couldn't believe it because every other time it has taken weeks to get a brace made. I think one of the orthotists worked through the night for us. We also live in California, so it's not like we could come back in a week for the fitting- but they were amazingly accomodating for Owen. I wish you guys the best of luck and hopefully you will be able to give Sol some relief soon! Take care and Owen --- Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: > Brace Question > > > Hi Everyone, we've definitely been pretty > incognito online this past > month has been crazy busy w/summer & such. Guest guest
Hi Joy, I have not been posting alot but do read most of them daily. My daughter, , goes to Dr. Khoury at Shriners in Erie. She just got her 6th cast put on August 10, 2006. Dr. K. believes we are pretty close to a brace. started at 42 degrees with alot of rotation . She now is at 8 degrees in this last cast with hardly no rotation at all. We would already be in a brace if we did not do a waterproof cast on May 4th that pushed us backwards alittle. We were pretty upset but Dr. k. said 3 more casts and then the brace.!! He told us that it would be done at the samt time her finally casting is done on the table and then a gentleman named would actually measure and mold the brace while in the OR right before Dr. K. puts on her last cast. Then wears the cast until the brace is complete. I guess the brace takes a few weeks to be made. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Jeniffer! Thanks for the response.. That's odd they had you stick something down to seperate the lining?? B/C that sticking is an indicator that there is raw skin under the cast, it's what happened both times with Solana (the first cast & this one) and there was indeed nothing but raw skin all underneath. I'm sure you would be able to tell otherwise if it seemed like there were more of a problem under there so if he seems fine & there's nothing visible then I'm sure it's okay. But I knew this time (from going through it the last time) that it needed to come off ASAP, & when I described in to them one of the other Dr's in Erie agreed (I think it was Koury or Kisham b/c is out until tomorrow) they agreed to get it off immediately & not wait until the weekend which I was glad to hear. So we had it removed & x-rayed @ our local ER here & it was the exact same situation/problem as with her first cast, was HORRIBLE & raw & stinky & rashy. It's much better now after 24 hrs + a bit more of cleaning & healing, but it was the same 1st degree burn type of skin breakdown, very gross. I personally think it's happened just recently b/c the cast has gotten so much tighter & leaved less room to dry out properly. So yeah, I won't be taking advantage of the " waterproof " aspect anymore either.. however I do like the fiberglass b/c of the size & weight of it biding her x-rays show to have held the improvment she's made, I really hope so!! It looks good, but not as good as after the removal of her last (plaster) cast to me so we'll see.. maybe we'll get plaster too while we're waiting for the brace (biding we're still able to go ahead & measure with the brace!). But I'm glad we made the call to have it removed, I couldn't imagine her having to live another day in it the way her skin was, I'm not exagerating either.. I have pictures of this time too of the immediate removal & it's aweful. Thanks for your input though on the cast & the bracing, we'll be sticking w/Shriner's for that part as well, I just hope it's still the next step for us :\.. time will tell I guess! Hi Sue-- Thanks for your response too! Sorry to hear you lost ground on casting, I hope that's not the case for us but I wouldn't be surprise now I guess. We're defintely going to be sticking w/Shriner's for the bracing too.. again, thanks for the response! ~Joy & Solana > > > > Joy, > > > > They had me actually stick something down in the cast (they NEVER > normally recommend this) to peel the lining from his skin. Guest guest
Hi ! Thanks so much for the encouraging words! I hope so too too but am afraid & anxious to find out. We're scheduled for the 18th of next month, if they work us in earlier it will probably only be a week or two ahead she said but I'll defintiely let you know for sure!! Guest guest
Yes, Owen is still in his brace (and rapidly outgrowing each and every one!) We are scheduled to go back to SLC the first week of September for a new molding. Fingers crossed all goes well. I'm also curious how kids get off the brace? Not that I think we are there yet, but do they just start weaning time in it? And any experience of how long the brace is needed once the casting process is done? I know each kid responds different, it is just so hard to not know if he is going to in a brace for one or four more years. Thanks --- mosunshinebaby <mosunshinebaby@...> wrote: > Awe, that's so great they were so accomodating for > you guys , > that's all great to hear. Guest guest
Joy I'm so sorry to read how bad Sol's skin was under the cast. Thank god for mother's intuition that you had it removed right away!! Guest guest
Hi Joy, So sorry to hear about Solana's problems with her waterproof cast. We will be thinking of you guys and praying that she is still on the the right track for her correction. Addy is due back in Erie on the Sept.4-5. If you get scheduled for an earlier casting -perhaps we will see you. I would love to catch up with you again. Take Care!.... Amy & Addy mosunshinebaby <mosunshinebaby@...> wrote: Hi ! Guest guest
Joy, I was wondering if you could update me on your daughter's improvements. Are they going to do a brace the next time you go to Erie?? How many casts has she had?? What were the degrees and improvements with her casts?? Does she have rotation that has been corrected?? Sorry so many questions but not up to date with the postings and trying to see if is still on track for her brace...a light at the end of the tunnel!!. Thanks for the info. Guest guest
Madison was weaned out of her brace after wearing it for 8 months following her 7 casts. It was reduced by two hours a day each week until she only wore it at night. She then wore it all night for a month and then discontinued it all together. She has been completely out of her brace now for 3.5 months. So far, all x-rays show correction is being maintained. She has an appt in Dallas this Friday for new x-rays and pulm f/u. I'll post Monday when we get back home. Guest guest
Hi Amy! Thanks, yes it's unfortunate.. hopefully the correction was attained though. And yes! We're scheduled to have her new one done on the 5th! So great, we'll get to see you guys again! We'll be there 7AM. My husband & I are debating though which one of us will go, he wants to go b/c (if you remember??) I'm pregnant (6 mos. now!) and he doesn't want me traveling the distance w/her by myself, but I think I can handle it I'm in great shape & feel great & can't stand the idea of not being there with her & not being there to discuss everything over w/the Dr.. so we're still in the midst of deciding, he's pretty adamant about me staying here but we'll see, I'm going to speak with my OB tommorow about it Will keep you posted! Thanks for the prayers, hope Addy is doing good I'd love to catch up w/you too, will let you know for sure soon.. take care. ~Joy > > Hi Everyone, we've definitely been pretty incognito > online this past > > month has been crazy busy w/summer & such. Guest guest
Hi Sue, After her last cast application Dr. was very pleased with her progress & did say he thinks we'll be able to look forward to going ahead & fitting her for the brace next visit. Since then we've mailed her out of cast x-ray to him (after her removal we had done here @ home) & are waiting to hear back as to whether her improvement has held & if we are in fact getting her brace done this next appt. or not... cross your fingers for us & good news! The only concern I have is the fact that other people have lost ground after the fiberglass cast. We should know by the end of this week & when I find out I will post on it! This cast she's in is only her 3rd cast. Before her first one she was in the 50's on both Cobb & RVAD. After her first removal she was in the high 20's for Cobb & 30's for RVAD. After her 2nd removal she was in the teens with both Cobb & RVAD & with her 3rd cast ON she measured 8o Cobb & 2o RVAD with great rotation improvement being made through all of them. I'm anxious now to find out what the x-ray that we mailed him reads (her out of 3rd cast x-ray) when I find out I will post & let you know! I think as long as you are seeing some little bit of correction with every cast that has been in then you guys are probably still on track you know, but of course every child is different, curves are different, response is different, etc. Solana has a Lumbar curve & they've termed her curve as pretty flexible (not rigid) so they're always able to get the measurements much lower in the cast & the " growing " she's doing in them is seeming to work great as a corrective process like these casts are supposed to do, I think as long as that's happening 's bound to still be on track for her brace.. check w/Dr. & let us know! Also, Solana had her first one off for 3.5 weeks before her 2nd application & the correction that was attained in the first cast held too so that was a good sign to me I thought, that the correction is holding, & once we make it to a brace & start weaning hopefully the result will be the same :\ Good luck in getting into hers, let us know what Dr. says. Cross your fingers for us that we didn't loose ground.. maybe we'll have to wait out another 2-3 casts too :\ Take care! ~Joy & Solana > > > > > > > > > Brace Question > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Everyone, we've definitely been pretty > > > > > incognito online this past > > > > > month has been crazy busy w/summer & such.
