Guest guest
2000 Navigating the Body *** http://www.navigatingthebody.com/ Navigating the Body is an arresting presentation of illness as art. Web designer Harman interprets the experiences of three women, all diagnosed with various conditions including fibromyalgia, a chronic disease whose main symptoms are extreme muscle pain and fatigue. The stories bring new meaning to the phrase " sick and tired " ; rather than present medical information, they portray the weariness of waiting rooms and doctor visits, the frustration of misdiagnosis, and the depression of living a life in pain. The images are almost like comic book panels, with picture strips of x-rays and neon collages of everyday activities abandoned because of pain. Each woman is credibly drawn because her story is presented from a perspective of understanding without self-pity or grumbling. And there's a light touch in the depiction of , whose theme is, " Well, you don't look sick. " An absorbing exhibit, Navigating the Body is essential to understanding the effects of chronic disease on daily life.
