CDC 07-19-11 CANADA: " Infection Warning at Two Toronto Body Piercing Parlors "

Toronto Sun (07.14.11):: Connor

Toronto Public Health is recommending that some customers of two local body

piercing businesses get tested for blood-borne illnesses. The shops are NY NY

Body Piercing, 1700 Ave., and New York New York (Accessories & Body

Piercing), 423 Queen St. W. The recommendation to undergo testing for HIV and

hepatitis B and C affects about 200 people who were pierced at the parlors

between Nov. 6 and March 1. TPH, which routinely inspects all personal service

settings, found a gap in testing for the two shops’ sterilizers, which need to

be tested every two weeks. “We have had no reports of infections associated with

these establishments,” said Dr. Herveen Sachdeva, associate medical officer of

health. “The risk is very low, but as a precaution we are advising anyone who

received body piercing at one of these locations to see their doctor and get

tested. These individuals may have been exposed to improperly sterilized

instruments.” New York New York’s other two Toronto locations were not included

in the warning. For more information, telephone TPH at 416-338-7600.
