5-point agenda to control hepatitis

10m infected with hepatitis virus in Pakistan

Nazia Hameed

ISLAMABAD: Under the Hepatitis Prevention and Control (HPC) programme, a

five-point agenda has been formulated to control the rising number of hepatitis

patients as about 10 million people have already been infected with the

hepatitis virus in the country.

This was informed in a conference organised here on Saturday under the aegis of

HPC programme which was attended by doctors, experts, representatives of Medical

Association, Beauty Parlour Association and Barber Association.

The conference was informed that nearly 7 million people are affected by

Hepatitis C while 3 million are suffering from type B virus.

Speaking at the conference, HPC Programme Manager Dr Sharif Ahmed Khan said that

under the five-point agenda it would be ensured that the water supply and

sanitation systems were improved and the hospitals' wastage disposed of

properly.

Dr Sharif said that the agenda also recognised the need for a change in people's

attitude towards treatment of the disease. A campaign to create awareness and

administer vaccination to prisoners was underway, and so far nearly 100,000

prisoners have been vaccinated, he added.

It was revealed in the conference that transfusion of the unsafe blood, use of

unsterilised medical equipment and reuse of blades and other equipment by the

barbers were the main causes of the fast spreading of hepatitis. Safety measures

would be taken under the HCP programme, it was said.

The conference was also informed that free treatment facility has been provided

to 32 hospitals in Punjab, 21 in Sindh, 18 in NWFP, 17 in Balochistan, 2 in the

federal capital and 4 each in the tribal areas, Azad Kashmir and the Northern

Areas. Barbers, beauticians and representatives of Medial Associations also

presented their suggestions on the occasion.
