Immunisation programme for babies

Babies will be protected against meningitis, pneumonia, liver disease and blood

poisoning under a new national immunisation programme.

Up to 2,000 GPs have been trained by the HSE to administer the vaccine jabs,

which have been introduced to bring Ireland in line with best international

practice. The scheme is aimed at all babies born since July 1, 2008 and a 'catch

up' programme for all children aged under two will also come on stream.

" The additional vaccines will protect babies against two serious diseases -

Pneumococcal disease which can cause meningitis, septicaemia (blood poisoning)

and pneumonia and Hepatitis B infection that affects the liver and can cause

lifelong liver disease, " said a HSE spokeswoman.
