Guest guest
CDC 06/16/06 GEORGIA: " Eye on Hep " Southern Voice (Atlanta) (06.09.06):: Zack Hudson For 10 weeks this summer in Atlanta, a team of volunteers will visit local gay gathering places to answer basic questions about hepatitis A and B and encourage men who have sex with men (MSM) to take advantage of the readily available vaccines for both viruses. The outreach is timely, said Hep Team National Coordinator Harold Levine. " There hasn't been a large program [working for hepatitis prevention] here for several years, so it all sort of came together, " he said. MSM need to know they " are at an increased risk of what is a very preventable disease, " he said, adding that for the past couple of years, the number of hepatitis A and B cases among MSM has been increasing. Hep Team Atlanta is working with the national program, AID Atlanta and the Fulton and DeKalb county health departments on the effort. The team is largely composed of AID Atlanta volunteers who have completed a two-hour training course, said Raphael Holloway, prevention programs manager for the agency. " They're going to help create a buzz to increase community awareness that there is a vaccine available for both hepatitis A and B, " Holloway said. " They have information about where [people] can get the vaccine. " At the Atlanta Pride festival held later this month, the orange-shirted Hep Team Atlanta will set up a booth offering the first round of hepatitis A and B vaccines. Hep Team Atlanta will also educate gay men about sexual activities that can be risk factors for hepatitis A and B transmission. _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar – get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/
