Apart from that, if the tests report positive results, the women will be provided free treatment in hospitals to ensure that they do not transmit the diseases o their children. Talking about the latest initiative, the Deputy Director, of the National Center for AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Disease Control and Prevention, Wang Ning, said that this is the first policy that has been implemented across the nation and will help in preventing the spread of diseases. The Chinese government will end up spending a whopping $106 million on the project on an annual basis. He added that the new policy will help in preventing the spread of conditions from mothers to their children. He added various epidemics like syphilis will be controlled with the help of the new initiative. It needs to be kept in mind that data released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention had reported that seven in every 100,000 live births that took place in 2003 involve the transmission of syphilis. The number increased to 57 cases per 100,000 births by the year 2008. Blame for the increased rate of transmission was leveled on the lack of compulsory screening of pregnant women for syphilis.
