Antidepressant Paxil Increases

Suicidal Thoughts, Says New Study

By Rausch

The antidepressant Paxil may cause suicidal thoughts in

adults with major depression,

according to a report from the drug’s company.

GlaxoKline used 15,000 patients and 57 trials looking

at different psychiatric illnesses.

The report in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found low

suicide attempts, 0.34 percent, in participants taking Paxil compared to 0.05

percent for people in fake treatment with a placebo.

“The scientific evidence does not establish that

paroxetine,” –an ingredient in Paxil- “causes suicide,

suicide attempts, self-harm, or suicidal thinking,” said

Alspach, spokeswoman for GlaxoKline.

“Nonetheless, all patients who are started on antidepressant therapy

should be monitored appropriately.”

In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a

warning that children and adolescents might have increased

risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors on antidepressants.

The FDA found in clinical trials

that 4 percent of children on antidepressants thought about

suicide compared to 2 percent on a fake medication.

In 2006, the agency extended the warning to include young

adults up to 25 and now all antidepressants labels state

that they can increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts

and behaviors.
