MLK, Jr. Nephew Tries Suicide by Fire

INDIANAPOLIS-January 9, 2006 - Authorities in Indiana say a nephew of

slain civil rights leader Luther King Junior set fire to his own

apartment.

Police in the Indianapolis suburb of Lawrence say King was trying to

kill himself when he started the fire last Tuesday - noting that he refused to

leave when rescuers arrived. They say he sought mental health counseling after

the fire. He could end up facing charges for the arson. King is an associate

pastor at a Baptist church in the Indianapolis area. The pastor there says he

believes the fire was an accident and the alleged suicide attempt is a

misunderstanding.
