In this case, I it is my opinion that absent Paxil, the homicide would

not have taken place. After an increase in dose of Paxil from 10 to

20 mg, I thought that began to have symptoms of mania,

euphoria with some uncharacteristic almost childish retaliatory

behaviors. He felt so good that he stopped the drug. He is a 50 year

old guy with no prior history of violence/aggression. The

breakup/divorce was ongoing for months with no indication of violence.

There was no acute incident prior to the homicide. What changed was

the Paxil. Manic from the first dosage change, two weeks later he

stopped the drug and had even more withdrawal mania. He killed her

about 6 days after the last pill. I was able to present a powerpoint

slide show to the jury providing data on Paxil and Paxil withdrawal

related violence. The scientific testimony went over well. One big

problem with these sorts of cases is that mania, which comes with

increased goal directed behaviors, is really difficult to distinguish

from criminal intent. I think that the press, particularly this

reporter from the Union who has covered the trial, has been strongly

biased towards the prosecution. I don't think that Napa was far

enough away from Nevada City. The jury wasn't going to let the 'nail

gun murderer' walk out of the courthouse a free man. There is no real

way to know whether or not the Paxil made him do it. I understand

that there might have been more information that I did not have access

to, but I think that the Paxil did make him do it.
