Guest guest
ita, Thanks for responding to my questions. I am not really trying to lose weight (although I would like to trade about 10 lbs. of fat for muscle); I was trying to understand what an " ideal " or reasonable caloric intake should be for a 45 year old man of my size and activity level... I had gleaned a tidbit here and there from others' conversations in this regard and thought that had recommended the caloric intake should be the body weight X 8...or 1520 for me. Perhaps this amount would be specifically for weight loss...I don't know. I have found food combinations that bring my protein levels up to 190 grams per day...but I sure have a tough time consuming so much food. I will try to eliminate my last two vices (Chai tea and chocolate) and see if that makes room for a little more of the good stuff. Fats are still up there (hovering around 90-100 grams) but they are the angelic fats; carbs are also in that 100 gram milieu... The percentages look like 42% protein, 42% fat, and 15% carbs (+ 1% alcohol) in the world of calories. Exercise is happening more regularly now with fewer extremes; I am trying to restrict my large boulder moving tendencies and work out more evenly 3 days a week at the gym + work stuff. It is certainly a commitment to adjust the work and family schedule to accommodate these workouts, but I think they are doing me good. Sounds like you are on a roll yourself with rather speedy weightloss...you'll be at 150 in no time! Keep at it... I also take supplements which include most of the things my food seems to be deficient in but, I would rather get these nutirents through my diet if possible; what is a good source of Calcium and Magnesium for we O's? Thanks again for the input a... Adious senora, ...O-nonnie for Hi , ita, here, I think I've seen you on Nina's nonnie list? What are your goals with restricting your calorie intake so severely? I'm at the same weight as you and about 2,300 calories per day is resulting in more than a pound per week weight loss for me. My exercise is brisk walking 30-60 minutes, 4-5 times per week. I don't worry about the fat intake as a percent at all. Fat doesn't make O's fat! I think you are absolutely correct that you can't get enough protein without a decent amount of fat (over the 30% " recommendation " by some low-fat groups), and that you can't get the protein you're trying to hit on such a low calorie diet. My only suggestions for your daily food consumption is to consume more veggies. Your sample meal plan only included 2 veggies: spinach & broccoli! Unless you're eating 5 cups of the two combined you're falling way short of LR4YT guidelines. I think the protein goal is reasonable, and I would heartily recommend the LR4YT portion / frequency guidelines. I've lost 60 pounds since Oct 1, 2002, using ER4YT, DietPower software, and exercise as noted above. My goal in DietPower was 1lb a week, slow and steady and permanent. I started the nonnie variation about 6 weeks ago and I've lost at least 10lbs and I've quit tracking my calories in the software. Sticking really close to the nonnie recs is making the weight FALL off! I started at 250lbs, 5'7 " , and we'll see, my tentative goal is 150lbs. Dr. D'Adamo recommends a calcium supplement for all O's, so that definitely makes sense that you would need that. I think the O mineral supplement covers magnesium, too. For vitamin C, I recommend pineapple juice, a bennie for all Os. Not sure about those other vitamins, probably a good multi vitamin would get you whole. ita

I would simply recommend that you follow the diet and eat until you are full and not worry about calories. After all, 1 slice of beef is equal to about 10 candy bars calorie-wise. From a calorie standpoint everyone is different and a person's intake may need to vary depending on what's going on in his/her life. Once you go toward the high fat high protein BTD and away from the " balanced " food pyramid, counting calories is not very significant. Guest guest
...thanks for the tip! So 12x my body weight (190) puts my caloric intake around 2280...I suppose that is somewhat affected by my activity level and how many calories I burn? I have been a little surprised and suspicious that this computer program says that I've been burning over 3000 calories relative to the activities I enter daily. Does this seem likely on a moderately active day without exercise (in the gym)? I'm really not obsessive with this calorie thing...just trying to get a feel of what is really needed. I have always been wingin it before and think I may have been pretty far off in some respects (certainly protein levels). Your advice is appreciated... , O-nonnie RE: for That gives you 2100 calories. (100gr fat/190gr protein/100gr carbs.) To maintain - 12x your bodyweight. Guest guest
Hi , I am in agreement with the rest of the group regarding the need for you to have more frequent mappings. I'm not in your area but did go to the Advanced Bionics website and pulled up these clinics which should offer someone who can map your implant. They are in Virginia so I'm hoping there is one that can help you. I do have to say that 35 miles isn't really that far to go for mappings for many people though. This is because mapping an implant requires specialized training and very specific and expensive equipment. Do any of these centers help? Guest guest
It is not just a matter of taking a train or bus, you have to have an appointment. Taking a train or bus means getting to the Metro to get me to the train station, and when I get to Baltimore I must take a cab, or bus to get to the hospital, very expensive even if I could get the appointment.I am going to try to get to Walter and see if I can get an Audiologist who !can map my CI. Guest guest
Jeff, You brought up alot of great points! I'm pleased to say that thanks to J., I was notified that Cochlear does have materials in Braille for the deafblind. Advanced Bionics and Med-El do as well. Since my CI center only provided Braille materials from Advanced Bionics and Med-EL, I was unaware of the fact the Cochlear also provided them. In terms of educating the public about CIs and the deafblind, I plan to do my part in this regard. In fact, this past summer I was invited to speak at the American Council of the Blind's (ACB) national convention. Because of my CI surgery, I had to cancel. The person who asked me to speak was thrilled to hear about my CI and asked if I would consider speaking next year to talk about my experiences as a deafblind CI recipient. I'm also a member of ACB's Sight and Sound Impaired (SASI) Committee. We are only in our first year of existence but we hope to make some positive changes by the time next year's convention begins. I'm glad to see that you're so active within the deafblind community. Keep it up! We need more people like you! I wish all the best to your friend with her second CI! <smile>
